You Were Never Really Here - 8/10

Joaquin Phoenix is visceral.

Droford 08-01-2018 11:51 PM

Moviepass #81 Blindspotting 7.5/10

Was expecting something way more serious (although it had its moments) but it had some humor.

GD 08-02-2018 01:04 AM

Hey Droford, I've been having a lot of service interruptions as far as MoviePass is concerned. Considering cancelling it for AMC's offering.

GD 08-02-2018 01:05 AM

Incredibles 2 - 8/10

The short film was absolutely adorable.

He and I are talking about it in his thread. I'm right there with you. The surge pricing, limiting showtimes and eliminating movies all together was the death knell.

I've read you can use the 2nd and 3rd movie options each week as an extra ticket for a guest. That's brilliant if true. I'll be getting the AMC pass next week.

GD 08-02-2018 01:19 AM

Indeed. It's a bummer that they're not allowing members to watch "Mission Impossible: Fallout". Then again, whenever such a big film opens, I don't mind spending extra for IMAX / Dolby Cinema (which are included in AMC's A-List program). MoviePass was a lot of fun while it lasted.

Damian Rey 2.0 08-02-2018 01:38 AM

It was. I'll end up getting around 22 movies or so out of it. In about 6 months. That's a huge return on investment. But the AMC pass seems like it'll be a good get. Especially with the option to use any format.

Blue Demon 08-02-2018 09:19 AM

Super Troopers 2 - 3.5/5. It was fun, but the jokes seemed a bit stale.

Seanny One Ball 08-02-2018 04:12 PM

The Psychotronic Man (1979) aka Revenge Of The Psychotronic Man

No review, just to say I bought this for the amazing name and DVD cover art. This film has lots of weird shit in it and for some reason it has an incredible theme tune.

It's about a middle aged hairdresser called Rocky who drinks hairdressers sterilising solution(or it may have been booze hidden in a hair product bottle) and goes on a bender. He then wakes up with the ability to fuck things up with his mind after some weird floaty stuff happens to his car in....a dream?
It looks like a drive-in movie and the lead actor is clearly 45 with a marvellous thick moustache.

For production trickery there is a fair amount of slowed and sped up footage, the odd cut and loop here and there but this isn't a steak, it's not even a burger or a hot dog. This movie is Vienna sausage at best and sometimes those little bastards will do in a pinch.

I basically love this film.

For an indie flick with almost entirely amateur actors filling the cast I have to give it a 2.5/4.

Seanny One Ball 08-02-2018 04:12 PM

I accidentally reviewed it

Sixx 08-02-2018 06:23 PM

Fine review as always.

Seanny One Ball 08-02-2018 07:32 PM

I'm a big Jane Levy fan so I'm watching "Don't Breathe" for the first time.
This is fucking nuts. A genuinely tense horror film that hasn't descended into cheap jumps(yet).

I wonder if this inspired A Quiet Place? Seems like a very simple premise. Surely has a niche in the genre.

Seanny One Ball 08-02-2018 07:35 PM

Stephen Lang is kind of perfect for horror.

On a side note the young guy in this is the spitting image of Logan Lerman

Seanny One Ball 08-02-2018 07:53 PM

Oh Jesus Fucking Christ

Seanny One Ball 08-02-2018 07:56 PM

This is next level shit man

Seanny One Ball 08-02-2018 08:15 PM

Don't Breathe - 4/4

Throws you every which way but loose, then when you think you finally are loose suddenly the ground opens up beneath you and you're back in the cellar.

This could have gone comically wrong in the wrong hands(I'm thinking of James Wan and Leigh Whannel here) but due to the strength of performance from Levy, Lang and Minnette and the commitment to character you never really pick holes in the plot. Or at least I didn't and that could also be due to the pace of the plot. It zips along but it's a streamlined film with no unnecessary flash, all of the substance is saved for the script, performances and the quality of the production. It reminds me of an HBO show the way it moves.

GD 08-02-2018 10:38 PM

Eight Grade - 8/10

Absolutely amazing.

road doggy dogg 08-03-2018 09:27 AM

Mission Impossible - Fallout: 10/10

might be my fav action movie since Mad Max or John Wick. It's up there

Lock Jaw 08-03-2018 09:47 AM

Do I need to see any of the recent movies to fully appreciate it? Don't think I've seen a Mission Impossible since 3. Even that, I'm not sure I saw.

I mean, I don't really remember any.

road doggy dogg 08-03-2018 09:59 AM

Eh. There's some story stuff that you definitely would be missing out on. But if you just wanna see a crazy action movie with some really incredible stunts, it's worth checking out for that alone.

Frank Drebin 08-03-2018 10:16 AM

Heard it's sweet but I have no idea how many of the MI movies I've seen and really don't remember anything from any of them. Like, maybe I've seen 4 of the 10 or whatever. I'll rent this at some point when I'm bored.

slik 08-03-2018 02:02 PM

I will prob see it tonight and I haven't seen a MI since the 2nd one.

Lock Jaw 08-03-2018 02:52 PM

I've heard good things about the last couple, but just never sought them out....

Destor 08-03-2018 03:24 PM

Pretty sure im going to go see pooh bear tomorrow

Jordan 08-04-2018 01:55 AM

Mission Impossible Fallout - 9/10, small non specific spoilers ahead.

Amazing movie, so so fun, highly recommended to anyone Scientologist or not. I didn't like the crazy triple turn at the end of the 2nd act, truly got lost there but that aside I fucking loved that movie. In a year I will probably rate it 8/10 but for now, 9/10.

slik 08-04-2018 02:30 AM

Mission Impossible Fallout - 8.5/10

I haven't see an MI film in years. Loads of fun, reminded me of the old James Bond films, non-stop action and set pieces. Despite not seeing a MI film in a long time I didn't have trouble following the plot. Definitely recommended to action film fans.

You at least need to see the last one (Rogue Nation) since its a direct sequel that carries over.

Also somehow I've never done this before but I could only check into to Spy Who Dumped Me at 445 but I didn't want to go home and come back so I used Regal Points to see Darkest Minds at 245 since its blocked by Moviepass for 2 weeks anyway. Double Feature!

Moviepass #82 (*)Darkest Minds 7/10 pretty violent for pg13 but the story is kinda dumb

Moviepass #83 Spy Who Dumped Me 8/10 2nd funniest movie I've seenbthus year behind TAG

* - counting it since I earned points directly because of Moviepass

Oliver Stone's best film, the only one that can reasonably be called a masterpiece.

El Vaquero de Infierno 08-05-2018 08:24 AM

Mission Impossible Fallout - 8.5/10

A very good film.

Was the "White Widow" the daughter of "Max," the female arms dealer/broker who was in the first film? When you first see her in the club, she is going on about her mother "Max" to the audience.

GD 08-06-2018 12:19 AM

It's perfect for the MST3K treatment only it has too many great parts that may be overlooked as novelty rather than pure class.

Not impressive but a middling comedy gets my vote over any other mediocre genre film.

Not worth a review, probably 2.5/4

Three Identical Strangers (Documentary) - Solid. Right in the feels. Still a bit shook.

slik 08-11-2018 01:19 AM

Slenderman - 2/10

About what I expected but I was bored and felt like seeing a horror film. Not the worst movie of all time but definitely terrible. Highlight was a moment that was unintentionally hilarious and left the whole theater laughing.

Action movie masterpiece, and one of the best action movies of all time. Tom Cruise is the greatest.

I think A Quiet Place is out on DVD today. I will buy it and review it later. I've looked forward to this one and now since I have seen Don't Breathe I am in the mood for quiet horror.

Loud horror is garbage. Screaming annoys me unless absolutely relatable. Like proximity to tiny spiders.

slik 08-13-2018 12:59 AM

A Quiet Place is good -- I look forward to your thoughts.

Have you seen any of the following out of curiosity -- SPRING, The Endless and Eyes of My Mother?

Seanny One Ball 08-13-2018 01:01 AM

Krasinski lucked out marrying Blunt. Good couple though.

GD 08-13-2018 03:16 AM

Quality film.

Watched the new jurrasic world movie.

First bit was boring until Pratt showed up. After that i thought it was pretty good. Seems like i remember a lot of people saying it was shit but it wasnt bad. Definitely had some cliche bits but its a Hollywood blockbuster film so what do you expect?

6 out of 10 with 5.9 of it being all pratt.

Sleeping with Other People - Adorable.

They try not to sexualize Annie by giving her a complex character and a range of emotions.

"Ready Player One" is a lot of fun. How's the internet and access to "video on demand" where you live?

Seanny One Ball 08-14-2018 05:36 PM

There is one moment of ugly exposition that could have been handled a lot better. Spielberg' baddies are always far too wet, also. Just sopping wet pushovers. Good references, not sure kids or most adults would know the name Buckaroo Banzai let alone the suit but it's a definitely a feast for anyone into pop culture fantasies more than real life.

Yeah! They don't age well but I love the alternate cover art as opposed to the American home video releases. They're sitting in my old room along with my cassettes. I'll probably donate them to a library or just give them away to fans. When I was leaving for grad school, I digitized my entire (American) collection and shipped all the physical copies to a fan who really seemed like he enjoyed wrestling like I did when I was younger.

Droford 08-18-2018 01:01 AM

Moviepass #86 Mile 22 - 4/10 fight scenes with camera cuts that make Kevin Dunn look conservative, a storyline that was confusing at best but stupid at its worst. Wahlberg felt over dialogued and under actioned. And why the fuck do you get Ronda Rousey to go around shooting people and not fighting ? Still not the worst movie I've seen with MP BUT its bottom 5. Plus the ending clearly set up a sequel which I can only imagine will never get made but who knows.

slik 08-18-2018 02:20 AM

Good, both lighthearted and serious. Over two hours but doesn't feel like, never dull.

Eagle Vs Shark - 4/4

This film feels like it has been built after a lot of acting workshops where the same characters develop into real people over the course of the studio sessions before they're just perfect for the big screen.
People have called this another Napoleon Dynamite but there is so much more to this than a vague similarity to an admittedly brilliant film. This is a bigger film, it has a third dimension in that we get a female perspective of a pathological, absurd charlatan. A ruined man who rejects the positives that the world offers him in preference for the elaborate yet incompetent deceit he has regaled himself and his band of onlookers with.

The heroine Lily is a mouse with no pizzazz. Assuredly a shrinking violet through our first introduction, then quite obviously a fantastic example of positivity against cynicism. She commands every major plot point and yet we feel like we are on somebody else's quest for much of the film.

This film very nearly made me cry, not a rare feat generally speaking these days but for a comedy with a potty mouth, a wicked sense of humour (of abundant laugh-out-loud moments and lines so consistently funny that surely three viewings will still yield a very respectable laugh ratio) and a heart of gold it is unusual. Especially since the scene that did it was an analogous stop motion animation about apples

In summary this is a quirky, irreverent film about some incredibly idiosyncratic people with an undercurrent of deep emotional issues. None of it is cheap, at least it doesn't feel that way to me. I feel like Taika Waititi and Loren Horsley must have really loved these characters. It's warming to see a film with this much attention to character behind it.

Lock Jaw 08-21-2018 02:59 PM
