Watching The Meg,
SPOILER: show
there's an Oriental woman in this who comes off as a dangerously stupid bastard. They give her these lines like she's some arrogant professional then she continually fucks things up, nearly gets Statham killed and somehow gives him shit for it afterwards and he just smiles every fucking time.

I dunno who wrote this but their interpretation of comedy is basically "women screw things up and act superior regardless".

I don't find it funny.

In one particularly face-screwing example she actually sticks Statham on a winch in the ocean and when they start it to winch him back in she stops it just as the Meg takes chase to say "No vibrations!" Then realised Statham is now dead in the water so they have to restart the winch.

I'm sorry but that sort of thing pulls me out of films. That's not a mistake, that's a director purposefully making a character such a shithead that you lose focus on the action, the spectacle that cost millions to lure you in in the first place.

Idiotic.

Seanny One Ball 12-11-2018 06:04 PM

Three screenwriters is never a good sign. All male too. Clearly never heard a mother-in-law joke they didn't piss themselves at.

Seanny One Ball 12-11-2018 06:18 PM

Rainn Wilson is always worth watching and the kid in this is quite cute so there are good bits in between the varying examples of gross negligence.

The action is predictable as hell though. It's not as good as Deep Blue Sea, far from it. It's probably around the level of Jaws 4.

Fignuts 12-14-2018 03:18 AM

The Equalizer 10/10

Someone could probably critique that there is no tension in it because Denzel is basically Batman and barely breaks a sweat, but fuck it. Sometimes it's just really satisfying to see a revenge movie where a dude just stomps the shit out of a bunch of evil fucks, tension be damned, and this delivers in that regard, possibly better than anything I've ever seen.

I got it in a two pack with the second one, so I'm gonna fire that up in a bit.

Fignuts 12-14-2018 03:52 AM

The Equalizer 2 6/10

Fuck, not nearly as good. Pacing is really bad. Part of what made the first one so good was that the people he fought were real scum bags. These guys are bad people but they're just kind of random soldier guys. Nowhere near as slimy as the russian mafia from the first. Main antagonist sucks.

Also, the other instances of him helping neighborhood people feels a bit more forced and out of place within the main narrative, whereas in the first it felt more organic.

Finally, there is a twist that fucking anyone could see coming.

Into the SpiderVerse - 9/10

Seanny One Ball 12-14-2018 10:12 AM

I too watched The Equalizer 2 last night. Not as good as the first, the tone is consistent but the story isn't depicted nearly as well and it's lacking in the sudden, jarring action.

It does have two excellent fight scenes but they're early on and mean nothing to the story.

I like Antoine Fuqua and I love Denzel but they can do a lot better than this. The first was a strong action film that suffered a release too close to John Wick. The sequel is definite proof that Wick deserves a franchise, Equalizer does not.
They should have tied Denzel down to a short run tv series remake. They struggled to fill two hours with the plot here.

Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse - 9/10

Really fun movie w/ fantastic animation.

GD 12-14-2018 07:55 PM

That post credit scene though :)

12 Years a Slave - 8/10

slik 12-14-2018 11:23 PM

The Mule - 9/10

I can't really find any fault with it. It's not a classic so I can't give it a 10 but it's perfect in every other regard.

Damian Rey 2.0 12-15-2018 12:49 AM

Into the Spiderverse-10/10

Best Spider-Man movie to date, imo. Miles as a character is great. There were real stakes and consequences, the animation was outstanding. Like a motion comic. And I liked what seemed to be the Raimi Spider-Man and seeing how his life turned out.

Overall I absolutely loved this film. Cannot recommend it enough. The end credits scene is stellar.

Holy fuck I didn't know that. The whole voice cast was stellar.

slik 12-15-2018 03:05 AM

I'd say it was my favorite Spidey film alongside Spider-Man 2 (The Raimi one). When you think how off the rails this story could have gone it makes it all the more impressive.

El Vaquero de Infierno 12-15-2018 10:17 AM

Aquaman 6/10

Kinda naff, and ends up becoming a huge CGI mess; it will not age well.

Wonder Woman remains the best of the current DC films at the mo, but that is not a lofty position.

slik 12-16-2018 04:16 AM

Rich Hill - 9/10

One of the better documentaries I've seen. Here's the trailer since it's not well known:

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse - 8.5/10

Was really fun and entertaining, and the animation looked great.

Fignuts 12-16-2018 10:52 PM

I just saw it too, and ended up stopping and buying Spider-man on PS4 on the way home. So that should tell you how I feel about it.

There's not much I look forward to more than a Beat Takeshi film. The man is a genius.

Damian Rey 2.0 12-19-2018 10:30 AM

The Mule-7/10

A good, surprisingly funny at times movie about an old deadbeat dad/husband who turns to trafficking after his life fails him. It's nothing memorable, but it's an enjoyable 2 hours with a kinda meh ending.

slik 12-20-2018 11:08 PM

Aquaman - 7.5/10

The biggest spectacle of any superhero film yet. It's an 80's action film meets a video game. Has a "Star Wars but underwater" vibe to it. I thought it was a blast! It's not the best or most deep superhero film, but it's definitely worth watching for the huge spectacle of it all. The kids in the theater really seemed to like it. The girl sitting next to me got excited whenever Mera was onscreen.

Standouts are Jason Mamoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe and Nicole Kidman.

GD 12-21-2018 04:03 AM

Bumblebee - 6.5/10

Surprisingly decent. Haven't enjoyed a Transformers movie since the first one.

Frank Drebin 12-21-2018 12:21 PM

Birdbox 3.5 / 4

Really good. Tense. Not "scary" like the trailers make it seem. More survival drama. One of the better versions of it out there. Netflix finally has a good full length "A" movie of it's own.

Damian Rey 2.0 12-21-2018 09:43 PM

Aquaman-7/10

Goofy, funny, campy loud fun. This is what man of steel should've been really. The Atlantis stuff is really cool. The set and sound design are fun. I like how they handled Black Manta. The DCEU lives.

GD 12-21-2018 11:28 PM

I hope he says something along the lines of "Yeah!" or "My Man!" in the movie.

Lock Jaw 12-22-2018 04:53 PM

Aquaman - 9/10

Thought it was great..... a lot of "similarities" to Black Panther via a secret kingdom and clashes over who will rule it.... I think this was a much better movie but will not get recognized even half as much.

He does not say "My Man!" In the movie...... there may be a few "yeah"s and "woooooohoooooo"s

Seanny One Ball 12-22-2018 05:18 PM

I did not expect you to say 9/10 and comparisons to Black Panther are pretty exciting.

Could it be better than Wonder Woman? Is it the best DC film?

Lock Jaw 12-22-2018 05:37 PM

I probably would have rated it 8.5, but I rated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse that, and I think I liked this more (hard to compare them really, they are two different types of movies).

I think I'll still give the nod to Wonder Woman because of the perfect casting of Gal Gadot. Even after a movie I really liked, I'm still not sold that there couldn't have been a much better choice than Jason Mamoa for Aquaman.

Also please keep in mind that I am a DC fan-boy who is skewed to like DC things (Though who can acknowledge when they make terrible movies like BvS. I enjoyed Justice League, though)

Seanny One Ball 12-22-2018 05:44 PM

BvS wasn't a terrible movie at all. It was a massive waste of potential though.

DC movies so far have peaked at Man Of Steel and Wonder Woman for me. I think WW wa the better film but I am very keen on seeing more done with what DC has to offer. Flash was wonderful in Justice League, I hope he gets a film.

Seanny One Ball 12-22-2018 05:46 PM

I don't know what Aquaman looks like in the comics but I thought Momoa was good business on DC's end.

He was in Conan and was good but the movie was mediocre so you can see parallels with Chris Evans(Fantastic Four sucked then he did Cap. America for dirt cheap salary and now he's the best Avenger) of Marvel.
Maybe Momoa is the lynchpin that they need. Maybe he'll be their Cap.

Lock Jaw 12-22-2018 05:49 PM

BvS was pretty bad.

They've been working on a Flash film for awhile, but it keeps changing directors and titles....

Seanny One Ball 12-22-2018 06:01 PM

BvS was a 2/4 I think. It was a big waste but I did enjoy large chunks of it.

I dunno maybe it's just because Henry Cavill is my Superman. I think he's great.

Lock Jaw 12-22-2018 06:24 PM

I enjoyed him in Justice League. Not so much in Man of Steel, and pretty much not at all in BvS.

Seanny One Ball 12-22-2018 06:27 PM

Superman is a cunt in JL. Embarrassed for Cavill in that movie.

Fignuts 12-22-2018 07:08 PM

I didn’t really like BvS mainly because almost everything was in the trailers. And I was going to the theater a lot then leading ito it, so I saw said trailers several times. Will never forgive them for spoiling Wonder Woman in that movie. It was fucking Batman vs Superman. You didn’t need her in the trailers to sell it, and it would have been such an amazing moment had I not already seen it 5 times.

He sure did. I wouldn't go as far as to say it was a great film but certainly a very enjoyable experience.

Also appreciate that they're still shooting DC movies on film rather than digital. Looks more pleasing than Marvel.

Bird Box - 8.5/10

Really tense. Good film. Strong performance from Sandra Bullock, who I thought had good chemistry w/ her male costar Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight). But to be honest, Sandra never has bad chemistry with anyone really. I had no idea Sarah Paulson was in it at all so that was a pleasant surprise. Ditto for John Malkovich, Jackie Weaver and Danielle MacDonald.

slik 12-23-2018 01:12 AM

In 2018 Machine Gun Kelly shares the screen w/ Sandra Bullock and John Malkovich. Lol

I think it's on par with Black Panther and a little less than Wonder Woman, which is still peak DCEU. That said it's ridiculously entertaining and the fact that they embrace the camp of it all makes it that much more fun. Everyone gets to ham it up and it's glorious. Complete 180 from the overly serious attempts from Snyder.

Atlantis visually is great.

Seanny One Ball 12-23-2018 03:43 PM

Now that's a movie post.

Damian Rey 2.0 12-23-2018 04:36 PM

Also, Amber Heard is really fucking pretty.

Seanny One Ball 12-23-2018 04:41 PM

She is but she has never once been impressive as an actress. She doesn't deserve the career she has at all. Remember Estella Warren? She did Kangaroo Jack and then disappeared. She looks just like her and that's the best thing I can say about Amber Heard.

Damian Rey 2.0 12-23-2018 04:55 PM

Amber is pretty good here. I mean, not ground breaking or anything. But she's not Katie Holmes in Batman Begins.

Ruien 12-23-2018 05:00 PM

Aquaman 10/10. Quiet possibly my favorite super hero movie of all time. Granted I know nothing of the origin so I went in with no backstory except talking to fish.

Everything was well done. Even the actress lady was on point during the film. 1000000% loved that
SPOILER: show
Aquaman does not become super powerful with the new trident. He still needed to take the big bad guy out of the water to fight
.

Movie was hilarious also. Perfect mix of laughs and serious moments. Crushed WW imo. Fight scenes were superb.

Literally went to go see Deadpool 2 but they cancelled the movie so we went to Aquaman instead.

Seanny One Ball 12-23-2018 05:29 PM

Yes highly advised. Maybe have a beer while watching. It's a fun movie. The score is also really good. This movie is exactly what was needed for DCEU. I think people are going to love it and it'll have strong legs at the box office. The unrelenting energy in which it's written is on a level even higher than the Marvel films.

Not that it's better per se than their films. It's more like a modern day Reeves Superman. Completely silly and not embarrassed to be so. Might go see it again honestly.

I'm probably the only one that both went to see Welcome to Marwen (alone in the theatre) and liked it (from all the reviews I've read)

Venom - 1.5 out of 4

There's a good movie in there somewhere but the whole thing is rushed and stupid.

SPOILER: show
Man, people can get in and out of that top secret lab super easy. Also nice to know that children can hop international flights unattended and there can be billions dollars of destruction through a metropolitan area and you don't hear a peep about it. People really aren't all that terrified of Venom running around. It's as if it's a run of the mill day in SF which might actually be pretty realistic.

Anyway.....there's potential here but it deserved the bad reviews. I'm glad it made a bunch of money because I'd like someone else to have another crack at Venom.

Using my phone to stream Netflix through my TV. Watching Cam as my first film. I love Madeline Brewer, she doesn't get enough good roles but this is nuts. Seems to be a horror film about webcam models.

I might just change to a Sandler/Spade comedy.

Seanny One Ball 12-26-2018 10:03 PM

Seanny One Ball 12-26-2018 10:05 PM

Can't spend 90 minutes debating a wank in a Sandler comedy, that is certain.

Sixx 12-26-2018 10:14 PM

So disappointed in this Polish TV show I think I've mentioned. Hate Polish TV show, but my mom recommended it and I've seen a few scenes while at her place and decided to try it.

1st season - So Positevely surprised. It shows people of Warsaw struggling against the Germans 1941-44. Small groups, some lone people. Dealing with the fact they're overwhelmed, just shows them dealing with everyday life, everything they need to do do to get by. SMALL SCALE. Some really badass street fight scenes, some really cool, unexpecting but making sense plot twists. Actually unexpected deaths.

2nd season. - For some reason they're all in Cairo now, some jews are now very high-ranking SS and some of the characters are superhuman I think?

There's 7 seasons... I asked my mom and to my relief she only saw the first before convincing me to watch it.

WHERE THE FUCK IS THIS GOING?

Sixx 12-26-2018 10:16 PM

Season 4 - This one jew will be expiremented on by the nazis and he'll come out the jar Wolverine. Why? Cause he's had those sweet sideburns since the beginning.

Sixx 12-26-2018 10:17 PM

Season 7 - Thanos is a Nazi.

Cam was ok. I'm usually ok if certain aspects aren't gone into detail but there was no explanation for any of it. I mean, if it was all a metaphor for the Internet/identity blah blah whatever fine.

Seanny One Ball 12-26-2018 10:41 PM

Well I'm watching one of my favourite actresses in a sexy horror film and I don't feel very sexy at all. She looks phenomenal as usual and her take on the character is authentic and exciting but this is all existential horror in a sci-fi wrapping and I wasn't prepared for it.

Stripper Solaris.

I might just change to a Sandler/Spade comedy.

You know they still have Netflix on DVD.

I'm freaked out by how good it is.
I've seen too many webcam shows and I like Madeline Brewer too much to be fooled. This is high end for such a basic premise. I can't call if enjoyable until I see it through.
