Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome-6/10

Huge tonal and structural shift from the previous films. The beginning plays out fine. Max gets robbed of his pack of camels and supplies, stumbling into barter town, a civilization built to barter and trade goods and ran by auntie, played by Tina Turner. After realizing Tina is the bad guy, Max gets exiled and finds himself among a group of children waiting for a savior to take them to their utopia.

The film very much plays like more of an adventure film, with more whimsical gags, far less violence and slower pacing. Didn't notice but found out it as pg13. It was obvious looking back.

The movie itself is good. If it wasn't a Mad Max movie with 2 excellent predecessors, I would've liked it more. But for what was the final film in the original series it was a let down outside of the final and only case chase of the film.

Seanny One Ball 09-29-2020 02:54 PM

The way they speak in Thunderdome is terrible.
Educate your children folks.

Damian Rey 2.0 09-29-2020 03:20 PM

Lmao I mean I kinda get it. I just didn't care for the tonal shift. It was jarring. Thank god they pivoted back to what works in Fury Road.

Yeah, Fury Road is as good of a return to form as there’s ever been for a film series.

Wish I had waited till after I watched Thunderdome to re watch Fury Road. Would've had a greater appreciation for the masterpiece that it is.

August: Osage County 7.5/10

The patriarch of the Weston family disappears and turns up dead; the family come together and at the funeral dinner and the subsequent days after secrets are revealed and terrible truths told. A solid family drama.

I loved this movie. What a fun little psychotic romp. Not taken out of the movie at all by the fact that it was clearly filmed in the same mansion they filmed Billy Madison.

Remember watching that movie on a long flight. A lot of fun.

Let's see...I have to first seek permission from the village council so that they can sacrifice their first borns in order to collect funds for my flight ticket. Then begins the two day long strenuous trek through the Corbett national park and the Himachal valley. We find sustenance in berries, goat milk, and vindaloo curry which is native to the region. Once the aroma of human feces becomes prominent, that's when you've arrived in the mean "streets" of Bombay. We've been told that roads are coming in 2025. Traffic is a concern as cows often block travelers and aggressive monkeys tend to steal belongings. Once we reach the airport, we present the funds at the counter, and if the representative is not satisfied, we offer one of our village girls for arranged marriage. As you can see the whole process is quite complex and a logistical nightmare. I'd say a good 3-4 days. Unless they're shooting a Bollywood movie, because you're suppose to stop what you're doing and break into coordinated dance sequences as per tradition.

Lots of gore but a nice counter balance of dark comedy and slapstick.

I thought Ready or Not was a really fun, gory time.

The co-directors of this are directing Scream 5, which am I looking forward to.

Julie Bowen

The Frozen Ground-7/10

Suspense film where Nic Cage tries to chase and pin down years of missing girls and recovered dead bodies to John Cusak, while also trying to keep his star witness Vanessa Hudgens safe from being taken out of the picture. A nice reminder that despite no longer being big names, Cage and Cusack are still good at what they when given the right material.

Aftermath-6/10

Arnold plays a grieving family man who loses his family in terrible plane crash after air traffic controller Scoot McNairy makes a costly mistake. This wasn't bad. It was just too short. Not enough time is spent on Arnold to get you to invest in his character arc. McNairy'd character gets better development even though he's not the main character.

Bad Day For The Cut-8/10

An unassuming Irish farmer wakes up to find his mother brutally murdered. He escapes murder himself and sets out to avenge his mom and all the while discovers truths about his mother that paint her in a different light.

The Plagues of Breslaugh-8/10

A detective tormented by the loss of her fiance years earlier ends up on a case where the perp pass killing seemingly random people in gruesome ways while carving different labels into each victim, like "slanderer".

Seanny One Ball 10-13-2020 02:42 PM

The Frozen Ground is based on a true story so enjoy looking that up if you haven't yet. I really loved it when I first saw it, it's about as tense as a film can get and for once John Cusack plays to his strengths. I never liked him as a leading man, he has turned into an excellent antagonist though. See "Never Grow Old" for more Cusack in high level heel territory.
Cage and Cusack are still big names though, they just aren't blockbuster leading man material anymore.

Seanny One Ball 10-13-2020 02:44 PM

And "A Bad Day For The Cut" is essentially a perfect indie film and the very essence of why independent cinema has to exist. It has the purity that no Hollywood film will ever have.

It really was a great film. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Including the small bits of humor. The ending is also gut wrenching.

Idk if they're big names anymore. I know Cage has at least been in some bigger movies even of late. Cusack feels like a lost commodity. I'll look up Never Grow Old. He's also a good villain in Utopia on Amazon.

The Outpost-8/10

Wall to wall banger of an army unit stuck for months in an outpost buried at the bottom of a mountain, constantly under attack by Taliban forces, who eventually move to take over the compound with an all out assault.

El Vaquero de Infierno 10-16-2020 04:21 PM

Ava - 6.5/10

Jessica Chastain plays an assassin, whom after a bad job, is targeted by her own organisation; sub-plot revolves around her mending fences with her sister and mother after not seeing them for 8 years and her past as an alcoholic. Fairly average action film.

Personally, I think Jessica Chastain is wasted in action films.

GD 10-16-2020 04:33 PM

Did you watch it for Jessica's Chastains?

El Vaquero de Infierno 10-16-2020 05:16 PM

American Pie Presents: Girls Rule - 3/10

Why did I bother watching this? Dunno. Just because I watched all the other bad spin-offs I guess.

Spoiler: no boobs were shown so what is even the point

That's not American Pie. American pie always has boobs.

Midnight Special-8/10

Michael Shannon is in it, which should be enough. He and Kirsten Dunst have a son withseemingly super natural powers, and they're on the run from the government trying to get their son to where he thinks his destiny awaits.

The Trial of the Chicago-8/10

7 progressive protesters and the leader of the black panthers are put on trial by the current USAG in an attempt to be made an example of after protesting and riots broke out a yr earlier before and during the democratic national convention.

Dracula: Dead And Loving It - 3/4

If this was called "Renfield" it would have a good rating.
Peter MacNicol is funny as fuck.

Seanny One Ball 10-19-2020 09:28 PM

House Party - 3/4

I'm a big fan of comedy with real heart behind it and this was a film I tried to buy on DVD many times growing up only to be dissuaded by the literal packaging of the dvd. Bright yellow with a guy who's hair defies science?! I already own BTTF.

"Black America" is a hugely weird concept in film. It's acknowledging its own minority status but appealing to an immense audience.
House Party is one of the real efforts, it isn't blaxploitation. It's giving a few minutes to a very real moment in time.

Glad it was as good as I hoped, sad it wasn't given full marketing.

Not easy to outdo Leslie Nielson for the best part of the movie, but he does it.

Seanny One Ball 10-19-2020 10:04 PM

He was constantly hilarious in an otherwise funny film. This fella headlined in Sophie's Choice.

Seanny One Ball 10-19-2020 10:07 PM

Leslie Nielsen was great though. So out-funnying him was purely based on performance.
An earned, deserved win for MacNicol.

Also just between you and me there was a good bit of cleavage in that film.
Busty.

The channels were like that for a few days, my birthday was the next day and Diana dying pretty much wrecked it.

I love that it was a Don Cheadle movie in someone's eyes besides the studio.

Adam Sandler and Saffron Burrows are simply phenomenal in it. Don Cheadle actually does a great supporting role that oddly runs more time than what should be the main roles.

Synopsis of Almost Royal:

Two something-in-line to the throne "Royals" go to America and discover the culture.
It is filmed in a documentary style but with unassuming, non acting members of the public much like Borat.

The Mission 7.5/10

A Jesuit priest (Jeremy Irons) crosses paths with a mercenary/slaver (Robert De Niro), whom has murdered his brother over a woman, and they go to a remote plateau in the South American jungle to establish a mission. They subsequently have to defend that mission and others when the Spanish sell the territory to the Portuguese, whom intend to enslave the natives.

I liked it; a good story, though the acting was sometimes a bit iffy. It had nice cinematography. There's no real action until the final 15-20 mins, but if you like a story give it a try.
