Attempting to watch Enola Holmes. The constant fourth wall breaking is annoying.

Enola Holmes - 5.5/10
Didn’t work for me. It was alright at best. |
Quote:
It's a beautiful looking film, Aidan Quinn and De Niro are very good. |

Check out Grave Encounters 1 & 2. Hidden gems. |
I'm watching Saw for the first time. I'm finding this film a chore; a 5/10 at best. I don't know why this film went on to spawn an entire series; it is entirely devoid of tension and not remotely scary.

Newton (2017) - 9/10

Can’t seem to get into movies like Saw and Hostel.
|
I didn't care for either, but I liked hostel better.
|
The first "Saw" is a fucking great film.
I suppose it has suffered because it inspired so much so fast and now every other horror film rips it off. James Wan and Leigh Whannel are good lads. It also has one of the best commentary tracks there is. |
Watching "Coming to America" for the first time.
|
Watch "King Ralph" next.
|
Arsenio Hall's facial expressions

Man, Arsenio hall <3

Coming to America - 7/10
I had a good time. Didn't have high expectations. |
Borat 2 - 7/10
Perfectly average |
Lake Mungo - moody and spooky, well done
|
I'm watching BlacKkKlansman. Pretty good...Eric Foreman as David Duke can't be unseen.
|

Tremendous casting tbh. |
Omar Epps looks nothing like David Dukes.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales - 3.5 out of 5
Latter half of the film was very good but that first half just dragged on too long and the overall story felt weaker than the other films in the series. |
Spotlight-9/10
Stellar ensemble cast tells the story of the Boston globe exposing the Catholic church for sexually assaulting countless boys thru the years. This movie is 5 years old and I never heard of it. Glad I found it. |
Election - 3/4
I tried to watch this with my parents over dinner but it got real smutty real fast. I finished it at home, it was classic Alexander Payne with the naturally bizarre side of human relationships. You can tell Payne is much more emotionally intelligent than a Wes Anderson or a David O Russell because the weirdness just feels right in his films. It's not a gimmick, more of a portioning out of the extremes of human behaviour along with the more standard beats. Good performance by Chris Klein in this. He was pretty perfect actually. I wouldn't say this was as entertaining as About Schmidt, Sideways, The Descendants or Nebraska but it shares a lot of the style. All of his films have a closeness or a sort of comfortable confinement that keeps the world small and the people in it few enough that you know them well by the end. |
Coco - 98%
So the wife and I have been trying to find good kids things to watch with our son that are both things he would like and not really stupid like most kids things. I heard this movie was good even though I can’t remember any marketing for it when it came out which is bizarre for a Pixar movie. Holy shit this movie is incredible. It is as visually beautiful as Finding Nemo and Wall-E, the story is fantastic, and the ending caught us completely by surprise. |
I should do a sub thread of all the kids movies I watch
|
Freaky.
Pretty entertaining. |

I am watching "The Passion Of Darkly Noon", "One False Move" and "Defending Your Life" tonight.
So far "The Passion Of Darkly Noon" is pretty unusual and it is shot beautifully. It feels like a fairytale or a really high class porn film. The sort they make in France with almost no sex in. |
Actually I think maybe it's just 90's Ashley Judd combined with the HD creating an almost Dior or Chanel style fantasy out of the surroundings.
Pretty sexy stuff for what is purportedly a psychological drama or thriller. |
Ok, this is starting to feel like some sort of old American allegory from the first settlements.
A frontier fable. It jumps from dreamlike and sexy to full on psycho delirium in no time. Brendan Fraser is pretty good in this. He's playing 100% against type. |
The big shoe thing is pretty weird.
I like it though. |
This film is the right sort of strange.
Only real life could feel this much like a dream. It's all weird but it all makes sense. I want to compare it to "The Enigma Of Kaspar Hauser" in that it could happen and if it did it would baffle anyone on the outside looking in. |
The Passion Of Darkly Noon - 3.5/4
Whatever the hell this is, it went big and I can respect that. Still trying to decide if it would cost a fortune to make despite being a confined set with only two locations. The camera quality is way higher than you'd expect for an indie from the mid 90's. I mean this would have been a great waste to see on screens back then. It looks pretty incredible now anyway. A weird, weird film with an ending that will blow your tits off. |
Justice League Dark - 6/10

8/10. Pretty good movie, exceedingly good for a modern movie. Was really good up until the ending, which they botched imo, with "Stronk womyn" trope, but other then that really enjoy it. |
New Mutants 6.5/10
Better then expected but doesn't seem like it has much rewatch material. Even the final battle was just ok. Still better then Dark Phoenix which is a shame considering the talent in that movie compared to this. |
Mystery Team - 3/4
Somebody should have put me on to this when it came out. It's not massively laugh-out-loud funny but there are some well delivered gags that keep it trucking along. Good stuff. Just a nice wee comedy from the start of Donald Glover's career. |
Watching Taika Waititi's "Boy".
Big laugh count and a lovely optimistic tone with that trademark hint of heartbreak ever looming. Great so far. |
Boy - 4/4
Taika Waititi has a 100% success rate at making beautiful, wonderfully funny films that don't look or feel the same as anything else at all. He's the best writer/director working and he's going to be considered one of the very best of all time eventually. "Boy" jumps straight into my favourite films of all time. The lead role was played as well as you'll see a child act, really a tremendous film from top to bottom with no foot out of place and it's easily the best acting job Taika has ever done. |
Blues Brothers - 6/10
I’ve been meaning to watch this for a long time. Such a good time. |
RUN - 8.5/10
Might just be the best thriller I've watched all year (it's on Hulu). |
Watching Ghost (1990) on Netflix in bits and pieces...

I might consider purchasing it and viewing it again in the near future.

I also need to "reevaluate" how I rate these movies.

Ghost - 6/10 |
The Bodyguard is surprisingly watchable.
Give that one a go. |
|
Dave, have you seen "Boy" yet?
|
Watched 1997's forgotten classic "RocketMan".
The "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt" bit and the "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands" bit are friggin hilarious. It stars the guy that played the piss drinking traffic cop in Dumb and Dumber. Pretty great. |

Masaan - 10/10

Hillbilly Elegy - 7/10
I don't understand the bad reviews at all. The acting is good, in particular Glenn Close and Amy Adams delivers. A story about addiction and breaking the cycle in dysfunctional families. A bit touching. |
It looks awful.
You should be watching Joe Carnahan's new joint. Frank Grillo and Mel Gibson inside a video game. Getcha some! |
The Christmas Chronicles-7/10
Kurt Russell vibes as easily the coolest and most charismatic Santa to hit a screen, imo, in a funny little family movie. |
Watching Adam McKay's Vice and it is pretty boring so far.
|
Vice - 5.5/10
|
Boss Level - 3.5/4
Great fun, lots of Frank Grillo beating the shit out of people. Joe Carnahan's funniest film after Stretch. |
Bastard y Diablos - 6.5/10 maybe 7

Oops, sorry about that. :o

I watched Doctor Sleep again. 8/10 . I want to suck on Rebecca Fergusons titties so bad.

RP getting really tame in his old age. Used to be all about drinking bathwater and eating poop. Now its just getting to 2nd base.
|
Yes, God, Yes
Now, I should go back and watch Saved from 15 or so years ago but I remember thinking that it wanted to say something but was too afraid to actually say it. This one does. Very unassuming but probably will resonate alot with those who grew up in a religious household while questioning some of the people who seemed holier than thought. Solid cast performances all around. Never seemed to hit you over the head with its themes and was just a nice and simple story. Nothing groundbreaking but thats not the kind of movie this is trying to be. 3/4 stars. |
TENET - 9/10
Nolan's vendetta against our hearing continues. |
Shutter 7.5 / 10.
An old thriller from 2008. Joshua Jackson is in it. Some Japanese girl haunts him and his girlfriend, but is it for a valid reason? Tune in to find out! |

Fine movie. Nothing wrong with it. Nothing special about it, especially compared to other Pixar movies. A good medium stakes movie to turn your brain off to on a slow weekend. |

Watching "Magnolia" for the first time. Pretty heavy stuff.

Klaus-8/10
Beautifully animated Netflix original take on the origin of Santa Claus. He starts out as a widowed toy maker who partners with a postman exiled to the middle of nowhere to establish a functioning post office. A very sweet story with funny slapstick style comedy, touching moments and a bit of coming of age mixed with, all ending with a hint of magic. I think it's an instant Christmas classic. |
Get Santa-7/10
Father and son have to save Christmas and spring Santa from the joint, who's crashed his new sled and arrested on breaking and entering. Very silly premise but it works. |
Tenet - 3/5
Audio was so fucked up the volume buttons on my remote got quite the workout. And, even with all the explaining, had no idea what the hell was going on most of the time. |
I feel Christopher Nolan should be boycotted until he gets his act together, concerning the poor dialogue audio in his films.
|
I couldn't tell you any of the dialogue in tenet. I didn't see Dunkirk but I heard it was loud as fuck.
|
I kept the subtitles on for TENET. And yes, Dunkirk was very loud in the cinema hall.
|
Magnolia - 9/10
|
Dunkirk was awesome, but I'm a sucker for WWII movies in general.
|
Blade Runner 2049-2049/10
Prob already reviewed it but felt like watching it again. What a fucking masterpiece. I'm a sucker for Ryan Gosling. Damn near everything in this film works. It's shot beautifully. The score is perfect. The story itself, the idea that Deckard and Rachael could produce a child and the chaos that could ensue should it be made public knowledge, is intriguing. Shame it bombed financially because I really would've loved to see what the next chapter would've been. |
Blade Runner: 2049 was spectacular. Have high expectations from Dune.
|
As do I. But I honestly think it'll flop. I think it would've flopped in theaters and I think it'll flop as far as viewers go. For the same reason Blade Runner did. I don't think there's an obvious audience chomping at the bit for it.
|
The Croods: A New Age-8/10
Funny slapstick and gag filled comedy about the cave family stumbling onto a modern family and hilarity ensuing. Voice cast is terrific. |
American Sniper - 7/10
