There Will Be Blood: 2 out of 5 stars. Super boring.

LuigiD 05-14-2010 08:52 PM

Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa.
I took a film class this semester and I loved what I saw by Kurosawa. It was so fucking dark and nihilistic. The movies have this terribly negative moods to them that reflect the attitude of the Japanese after World War II. Seven Samurai is by far one of the more action packed movies by Kurosawa..less atmospheric tho. Not as good as Rashomon but excellent regardless.
9 out of 10.

Serenity (The Firefly Movie) - 8/10

Fucking loved this movie. Loved the show Firefly. I loved the whole concept of the "space western." I really just wish there was more to it than one season. Felt they could have had a nice overarching story than a bunch of separate ones. Felt like one season left a lot of stories unfinished.

Anyways, the movie is pretty good. I don't think it's necessary to watch the series beforehand (because the series precedes the movie), but some of the relationships are better understood by watching the series first.

Robin Hood: 9.5/10

Awesome movie. Prince of Thives is one of my top 20 movies ever, so I had to really tell myself not to try and compare it with it going in. But it was a totally different story and take on everything. This kind of goes back and shows how Robin eventually becomes the outlaw that he'll forever be. The guy who played King John is like the perfect King John. The Sheriff of Notingham in this movie was a goofball, unlike Alan Rickman's version in Price of Thieves. Lots of great action and good buildup to the ending.

From the looks of it, I think we may get a sequel.

Watching it right now. I am certain that Costner is not a good actor. Freeman is quite cheeky. 45 minutes in and honestly I like the new one better but its still good.

It wasnt a bad movie by any sense, just nowheres near the first two.

Jeritron 05-21-2010 11:26 PM

is 7/10 supposed to be too high of a score, or too low of one?

I thought that movie was horrible, and I liked the first. Second was a good sequel but nothing I wanted to really see again

El Fangel 05-21-2010 11:58 PM

Ok, fine. 6/10

thedamndest 05-22-2010 11:33 AM

7/10 is usually my go to number for when I feel like a movie was okay but nothing special. If I go lower than that it usually means there was something(s) wrong with it. I probably would give At World's End a 5/10 because it isn't really Robocop 3 ridiculous, but it also doesn't break any new ground and does reuse all of Jack Sparrow's one-liners. The score was good.

Speedway Junkie

8/10

surprisingly good indie flick from 2000 that stars Jesse Bradford who goes to Vegas to try and earn cash to move to Charlotte to race cars

features a rare cameo from Jonathan Taylor Thomas as a street wise male hustler

Jeritron 05-24-2010 01:06 PM

The Game 7/10

Hadn't seen it before. It was a pretty good thriller. The premise sort of dominated the movie, and most decisions seemed to be in the interest of the viewing experience, rather than making much sense.
For instance, if you think about the motives and reactions to the reveal at the end, you're not going to get much sense.
Still, it's a skillfully made thriller and fun to watch.

El Fangel 05-25-2010 03:20 AM

Observe and Report - 5/10 - Had a few laughs, but seemed to be loosely strung together scenes of stuff that didnt really make a lot of sense.

Avatar - 1/10 - CGI looked cool, thats about all the movie had going for it in my opinion.

AKin3D 05-25-2010 07:33 AM

Tekken: The Avenging Fist

7/10

It was a whole lot better than I thought it be. It's in Chinese (Cantonese), so over seas movies are hard to tell what your getting. The effects were cool, but I did get tired of them. Story was ok at first, then they rushed everything and then it was the end. Since I only played Tekken a handful of times, I'm not able to say much about it to the game. A few reviews I read thought it was ok and not the worse game movie.

Requiem 05-25-2010 03:32 PM

Where The Wild Things Are - 8/10

Really liked this movie. All the characters in the other world were different people in his life, or different aspects of himself. Was about a kid just trying to deal with some rough circumstances in his life, and distant/difficult relationships with the people around him.

Emperor Smeat 05-25-2010 10:54 PM

Robin Hood - 4 out of 5 (8 out of 10)

Good action scenes for a short film and a decent prequel to the Robin Hood story.

Only thing I didn't like was the random switch from turning Robin from hero to outlaw as the ending since it was too brief and out of nowhere based on the rest of the film.

PorkSoda 05-26-2010 09:06 PM

The Sixth Sense - I knew the twist before I watched it, but I never sat down and actually watched the movie. I'll give it 7/10.

The Road - Stayed true to the book, when I found out that Charlize Theron was cast as the wife I thought they were going to develop this compex back story or something, but they managed to keep the ambiguity of the novel. Despite a good director and strong actors I still felt like something was missing though. 8/10

Lovely Bones - Dumb as hell. 4/10

Crumb - Pretty amazing documentary about an eccentric "underground artist" and his two mentally ill brothers. 9/10

Really? Though the premise was really good but the acting from William Dafoe for his standards was awful is the conclusion was as mindless gorefest. With that said I couldn't give it any more than a 2.5/5 for me it was a real disappointment maybe my expectations on this one was a little high.

Legion 2/5 - Could basically give it the same review except replace Quaid for Dafoe this flick was just plain wrong on so many levels and I'm not even religious yeesh.

Lovely Bones 3/5 - Can see how this one may not be everyones cup of tea but I found it interesting enough reminded me visually somewhat of What Dreams May Come definetly a rental.

Exit Through the Gift Shop - 9/10
Directed by Banksy. This was "fantastic." To sum it up quickly, some dumb French guy who took his camera everywhere tried to make a "documentary" about Bansky and other street artists, but Bansky thought the doc was ridiculous so he took over and made a documentary about the guy who was making the documentary about him. Really entertaining. Also good "commentary" about "the art scene." Highly Recommended

Also, I saw Batman Returns in its entirety for the first time yesterday on HDNet. Prior I had only seen bits and pieces of it and never the ending. WTF was up with the Penguin army? Seriously? 5/10

thedamndest 06-06-2010 09:54 PM

Maybe it was possible, but it was just pretty silly to me, seeing all those penguins with rockets and metal caps marching around..

If they put the Penguin in as a villain in the 3rd Batman coming up, I hope they steer away from the Devito version since I always liked the 60's tv version..but somehow I doubt they'll go with the Penguin as a villain.
