Ladybird - 10/10

Jordan 01-07-2018 09:43 PM

I, Tonya - 8/10

Really fun, very good acting and great storytelling style of breaking the 4th wall in a really cool way.

slik 01-08-2018 09:10 AM

Call Me By Your Name - 7.5/10
Gorgeous setting, good soundtrack and great performance from Timothy Chalamet...but kind of boring the first half of the movie. Actor who played the dad was also good. Armie Hammer is, well, Armie Hammer, but that sort of works for him here.

Insidious: The Last Key - 4/10
Bad way to end the Insidious franchise. The story doesn't really make sense and has lots of plot points that go nowhere. The haunted house is located on the same property as an abandoned prison...but they never explain why or even go inside the prison.

El Vaquero de Infierno 01-08-2018 03:22 PM

Hostiles 7/10

Seanny One Ball 01-08-2018 10:15 PM

Logan Lucky 8/10 - Great fun, very smart caper which really wasn't what I expected. Adam Driver was good but Daniel Craig was hilarious.

Office Christmas Party - 7.5/10 - So much funnier than I hoped. A consistently funny and endearing little adult Christmas number.

Trance - 4/10 - Fucking terrible. This was like a shit remake of some weird French film but apparently it's an original opportunity to make another uninspired mess. Danny Boyle is caught in his own hype. He hasn't made a great film for a while and on rewatching none of his films really stand up as well as Shallow Grave. Trainspotting was always overrated but recent Boyle is bizarre and disappointing for me. T2, 127 Hours, Sunshine and Trance are all films that pretty much any generic director could have made.

Brawl In Cell Block 99 - 9/10 - After Bone Tomahawk we get this glorious and timely contribution to the prison genre. It seems like too long since a director making a genre film just said "fuck it" and instead of trope swerving just drives right through them. This is a brilliant film. It has big budget B movie written all over it and stood alongside Bone Tomahawk pushes this writer/director up next to Ben Wheatley and The McDonagh Brothers as one of cinemas best original contributors. Apparently he has 26 scripts sold and they are all in development hell so he's an auteur now. Fantastic.

Lego Batman - 7/10 - Will Arnett is always going to carry a movie this silly to an acceptable laugh ratio.

The Duel - 5/ 10 - A solid formulaic Western with the worst ending and worst ending speech of all time.

Valerian - 7.5/10 - This is what you get when the mind that brought you the Fifth Element gets access to a huge budget twenty years later. This could have been near perfect but it bounced around like a pinball with a bizarrely uneven tone. Cara Delevigne is unspeakably beautiful in it.

Kung Pow: Enter The Fist - 7/10 - I really wish I had seen this when it came out. My tastes are less infantile now so I was cringing half the time and laughing the rest. Had I seen it aged 15 I would have loved it forever.

Blood Father - 6/10 - Eh. I love Mel Gibson and the girl was smoking hot.

The Boss - 7/10 - Funny but too much fluff not a high enough laugh count.

Traffic - 6/10 - Supposedly a masterpiece. I prefer Logan Lucky than this preachy crap. Crash is a better movie than this and Crash aged horribly.

The Grey - 8.5/10 - High tension, high adrenaline action with a fucking amazing director at the helm. This is better than The Revenant.

Narc - 8/10 - Joe Carnahan is probably the best and least appreciated director that nobody can name. Imagine pulling together a police procedural film starring Jason Patric and Ray Liotta in their later careers and having it as a point of pride rather than shame fifteen years down the line.

GD 01-09-2018 02:46 AM

Leon: The Professional - 6/10

I would have liked it more but Dane dehaan is fucking God awful. Almost every scene he was in took me out of the movie.

Seanny One Ball 01-09-2018 03:11 AM

I really love Dane DeHaan so I really couldn't agree less. He seems to have made a career being the best thing about disappointing films. Chronicle, A Cure For Wellness and now this. None are bad, just not as good as his performances.

He wasn't quite as bad as Rihanna. I will give you that. I've seen jumper but I can't remember same at all so I may watch that again. He just rubbed me the wrong way in this. He also looks very tired and looks like he needs some rest.

Seanny One Ball 01-09-2018 04:33 PM

Oh God Rihanna was the worst, least necessary nor enjoyable distraction I have seen in a movie since Sting in those Wing-pants from Dune.

Frank Drebin 01-09-2018 09:33 PM

I thought Chronicle was ok.

Frank Drebin 01-09-2018 09:33 PM

The Green Room: 3/4 stars.

Good. Nothing fantastic, but a nice take.

Seanny One Ball 01-09-2018 11:03 PM

Green Room by the guy that did Blue Ruin?
I thought people over hyped that a bit too much before I saw it but it's a solid film with some great characters in it.
Blue Ruin was immense.

It's not going to blow anybody's mind but I think Dane DeHaan is excellent in it.

He looks like he should be the sickly quiet weirdo in everybody's high school experience.

Moviepass #31 Molly's Game 9/10 all around great movie

GD 01-10-2018 01:25 AM

Brad's Status - 9/10

Can't believe I've seen two beautiful films in such a short span of time.

GD 01-11-2018 07:03 AM

Frances Ha - 7/10

There were moments in the movie where I wanted to hug Greta Gerwig for being an adorable person.

Droford 01-11-2018 11:39 PM

Moviepass #32 The Commuter 7.5/10 for the most part it was ok and it was pretty much what you'd expect for a Liam Niesen action movie

Shisen Kopf 01-13-2018 11:22 AM

Darkest Hour---movie was longer than an hour and it wasn't a horror movie like I thought. Cannot rate.

Seanny One Ball 01-13-2018 02:15 PM

Those lying bastards

A.J.K 01-13-2018 05:52 PM

Jumanji 2 - Welcome to the jungle 10/10

I may be in the minority here but i liked this better than the first one and i love this first one.

Seanny One Ball 01-14-2018 01:25 PM

It's not a sequel.

Ruien 01-14-2018 06:22 PM

The Circle 9/10. I love looking at Emma Watson.

GD 01-14-2018 06:51 PM

Dodgeball - 3/10

Ruien 01-14-2018 07:05 PM

You watch3d that movie like 15 years late. It would have been funny if you were younger.

GD 01-14-2018 07:09 PM

I guess. I enjoyed Zoolander which was around the same time.

PapaGeorgio 01-14-2018 08:59 PM

I, Tonya - 8.5/10 Good pacing, went by quick. Funny moments, kept me engaged.

PapaGeorgio 01-14-2018 09:00 PM

The Commuter - 5.5/10 Enjoyable shitty action movie. As movie continued to progress, so did cliche moments. Liked aspects of it, not the worst way to kill an hour or two but nothing impactful overall.

Jordan 01-15-2018 12:43 AM

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 - 9/10

Amazing movie, so funny, so unexpected, can't wait for more.

Seanny One Ball 01-15-2018 12:21 PM

Margot Robbie is beautiful but a fucking horrendous actress.

XL 01-15-2018 12:28 PM

10/10

Ruien 01-15-2018 09:28 PM

Arrival 4/10. At the end now actually but it's been sooo boring. Only a super amazing ending will make it 5/10 but that's not likely.

Seanny One Ball 01-16-2018 03:18 PM

Arrival is one of the worst sci fi films i have ever seen. A complete and utter waste of time and resources.
The uderlying theme being that somehow Amy Adams has every right to continue down a path she knows will lead to doom. It's arrogant drivel.

Tonya Harding 01-16-2018 04:53 PM

I disagree. I watched it in the theater with one of my coworkers and we were both "blown away".

Sixx 01-16-2018 10:00 PM

Well, it was universally praised but you know, opinions.

Frank Drebin 01-16-2018 10:13 PM

Loved it.

Sixx 01-16-2018 10:14 PM

Hm, got it downloaded. So many movies on my HD. And somehow I can find time to sit here but can't find it to watch them.

Lock Jaw 01-17-2018 12:37 AM

I enjoyed Arrival a lot...... haven't watched it again, though.....

Fignuts 01-17-2018 07:03 AM

Blade Runner 2049- 5/5

I was really skeptical when the sequel was announced. It doesn't seem like the kind of movie that you would think to make a sequel for. That and Hollywood's current cash grab obsession had me dreading it. Especially since the first is one of my favorite movies.

Couldn't have been more wrong. They knocked it out of the park. Fucking loved everything about this movie. How they paced every twist and turn. The attention to detail in replicating not only the world of the original film, but the atmosphere. From the music, to the unique cinematography, they captured the feel of the first films world perfectly, but the characters and story allowed it to stand on it's own. That is something incredibly hard to do, and you don't see it all that often.

I love cyberpunk, noir, and the world of the original blade runner, so I'm not gonna act like I'm not a little biased, but I think this is a beautiful film, all the same.

GD 01-17-2018 07:07 AM

Was able to grab a steelbook copy from my local Best Buy

Fignuts 01-17-2018 07:33 AM

I also love that like the original, they never definitively say whether Deckard is a replicant in this one either.

I like to go with the Deckard is a replicant theory, but I think it's great that it's open to interpretation.

GD 01-17-2018 07:58 AM

Didn't Ridley Scott confirm that a while ago?

Fignuts 01-17-2018 08:08 AM

Yeah, but multiple people who worked on the film have different opinions on it.

The screenwriter and Harrison Ford both subscribe to the "Deckard is Human" train of thought.

Nicky Fives 01-17-2018 09:26 AM

Jumanji: 9/10 - Perfect family movie. I DETEST Jack Black, yet can admit he did an excellent job in the film. The Rock is The Rock, same goes for Kevin Hart. Never saw the original Jumanji, so I have nothing to base it off of other than the old one was about a board game, but as a stand-alone film it is great.

It's lazy pseudo philosophy and it annoys me to see it dressed up as some revelatory experience.

What blew you away about it? If it was the acting then fair enough but the story was laughably stupid, remorselessly cruel and about as insightful as one of Darren Aronofsky's shits.

Seanny One Ball 01-17-2018 11:16 AM

I tend to be vitriolic about films that cost me money and will never be played again.

My DVD/Blu Ray collection is massive and I resent "Arrival" taking up space in it.

Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter, Babel...the list goes on with critically praised movies that are actually shit, pretentious bollocks that have no point and rely on long tracking shots of countryside or some unrelated landscape because there's no fucking script!
That's one thing Arrival avoided, it showed you fuck all scenery and the script was horrendous so you know it existed.

I couldn't even finish watching Lucy it was so bad. I think I spent the first 45 minutes intermittently fast forwarding portions too.

Fignuts 01-18-2018 04:23 PM

I enjoyed Lucy, but I also went into it without any expectations of depth.

Seanny One Ball 01-18-2018 04:30 PM

I don't think anybody went into it with expectation of depth.

I worry about people that can't identify a bad performance from a good one. Literally anybody could have improved that film just by not having Scarlett Johansson's stupid face. She looks like she's confused all the time, even when she's supposed to look intense she just looks like she's struggling to read slightly above her level.

Ezra 01-18-2018 04:36 PM

While her face didn't live up to expectations her boobs played their part perfectly.

Droford 01-18-2018 09:46 PM

@lucy convo

The scifi was broken for me. The premise of humans only using 10% of their brains is false and a film built around that kept me from suspending my disbelief. I tried to look past it but coundt. Film may have been fine but i was too biased to notice.

Alien is horror masquerading as sci fi, Aliens is action masquerading as sci fi. I prefer Alien because the alien is terrifying but the motivations of Ian Holm's Ash bring a waking nightmare into reality.
I think the continuity is pretty much gone at this point though and I'm far more keen on a reboot after an extended hiatus than any further sci-fi dream teams or Ridley Scott involvement.

Betty Blue is another shite French film about an overrated daft bird.

The best French films are all related to crime or wannabe gangsters. People to pity.
These include La Haine, 13 Tzameti and the greatest of all L'Homme Du Train.
The only other great french films have Emmanuelle Béart in them back when she was otherworldly hot. It's a shame what time and bad decisions have done to her once beyond-beautiful face.

I was actually thinking about it. For me, "6/10" represents that the movie wasn't bad or even average. It was definitely good but not amazing...if that makes any sense.

Let me try to redo them

Aliens - 6/10 (An intriguing action film that I did not enjoy as much as the original)

Lethal Weapon - 4/10 (My expectations were quite low. I guess I conditioned myself to enjoy it in a bubble)

O Brother, Where Art Thou? - 5/10 (Typical Coen Brothers production. I would've enjoyed it a lot more if I wasn't already sick of Vishal Bharadwaj whose films have similar character presentation and plot progression)

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle - 5/10 (I was not expecting this film to be so enjoyable. I don't get Kevin Hart but I am a huge mark for Jack Black. Have been since I was a kid.)

Ruien 01-26-2018 06:04 PM

He is watching the movies like 20 years to late so it makes sense.
