He'd have a better product if he actually followed through with that philosophy. He has an opportunity with ROH to course correct somewhat by shifting AEW talent over there but he's going to have to keep the 2 brands apart for it to really work.

Kyle O'Reilly signed with AEW for 5 years. I can't imagine how anyone would justify that.

It’s an indictment on the state of wrestling though. And egg on Tony Khan’s face. |

AEW has not been good for wrestling in any other context than Vince McMahon’s profit margin or the top stars being solidified as such.

Worked out why Jade Cargill is turning out to be the best champion in the company (other than atrocious booking). She received training from Heath Slater!

Sorry AEW and Tony Khan I cannot buy the PPV this weekend because you didn't sell it to me. I'll still be watching and am halfway excited, just watch a wrestling PPV. I'm not happy with the way you've booked these new stars you've signed in the last year and now AEW feels like an alternative WWE brand to an extent. Can you please get some kind of TV deal for ROH so that you can take a bunch of the AEW guys that we don't need (mostly the ROH originals and NXT guys) and send them to ROH so that I can manage my enjoyment of AEW more?

Looks like a strong card to me with my only real gripe being DMD being in the Owen final. She really doesn’t need it.

Looking forward to the show. Every AEW PPV has been great since they started so I don’t doubt they’ll give me my money’s worth.

I was looking through the card and I think it looks a lot better on paper than the build showed us. The one match that rubs me a bit wrong is Cole and Joe because it is a direct transfer from WWE match and that's just a bit odd. More odd than Mox and Jericho back at Revolution a few years ago, because their characters were totally different. Plus I don't have any memory of a Dean Ambrose/Jericho match in WWE.
Aside from that Tony's booked a lot of AEW originals against former WWE stars. It will be interesting to see who ends up with the rub in those situations because you have to justify spending big money on these WWE releases, you can't have them job so much and from my memory the recent signings have all taken losses. Obviously you don't want to put the AEW guys in a spot where they look to be on a lower level than WWE's rejects. There is a very large AEW original presence on the PPV and that's a good thing. For me it's just that there are a lot of solid AEW originals that just don't cut it for me and they keep them around for the future, like Scorpio Sky who signed a 5 year deal. I can't watch that guy for 5 years are you kidding me? I wish AEW had a roster cap at 60 ppl men and women and anyone else was on a per appearance or structured deal for the "length of a program". |

The "Four Pillars" as they were known (MJF/Jungle Boy/Darby/Sammy) definitely held water across AEW's first 3 years.
But AEW and the wrestling landscape as a whole 3 years in is vastly different than when they started. I think many people expected that once AEW started they would gradually make some inspired indy signings, which they did (Kingston, Starks, Hobbs, Ethan Page etc) but I don't think anybody thought they'd actually get Punk to come back, or have a Danielson available to them. Plus tons of the WWE guys, I know future endeavors has been a meme for a while but when AEW started, WWE was signing everyone under the sun....I don't think anyone expected the caliber of guys available to be what it was. So really, with this in mind I can't get behind the notion that the Four Pillars have to be a focal part of programming just because they are originals. Of the Four, MJF obviously has the highest ceiling and is the one worth keeping at the top of the card. He's outstanding and he should always be featured. Jungle Boy is also only 24 and hasn't had a singles run yet, I think this eventual feud with Christian will give him a great veteran to work with and a story to really sink his teeth into and we'll get a better sense of what he can be as a featured singles performer. I like Darby but him being 29 doesn't matter much when he's liable to be crippled any day now. He's exciting but one note, and he's absolutely dreadful on a live mic. And Sammy has shown he only works as a smarmy heel, he doesn't have the range for anything else and there are others on the roster who could do it better. I think it's time to focus on letting the roster breathe a bit. Sending some guys to ROH will help a bit but I don't think they need to feel compelled to be loyal to the pillars when they've got a small army of guys who are better options than at least 2 of them. |

A LOT of people thought Punk would sign with the company back in 2019. It made total sense. He was doing nothing, they had money, he “hated” WWE. They approached him in an insulting way (possibly insecure talent’s prerogative to sabotage) and he tried to go back to the WWE. AEW’s fumbling of the ball at the start was not what people expected. There were a lot of possible big signings that people could foresee. Randy Orton being one of them. The talk was that almost everybody was interested in AEW. This is why the WWE buckled down on talent like Mike Kanellis with $500k per year deals. AEW provided a weak product, WWE relaxed, top talent chose to stick with Vince and WWE basically tore up those $500k per year deals. That AEW eventually ended up with a Bryan Danielson or that they eventually got a CM Punk is not that weird. It should have been the condition they had to navigate from the start. The story isn’t “golly gosh wow, AEW just has so many talented people that they can’t use a lot of their talent properly.” They mismanage themselves. Call it what it is. Tony Khan got asked in an interview with Sean Ross Sapp about the MJF situation. Tony danced around it with something like “sometimes wrestling thrives off on-screen characters playing off off-screen tension” and MJF quote tweeted it with:
“Fucking lol. Fuck this place man” It has since been deleted. |

I’ve said it before: MJF wants off the sinking ship and he’ll try and work it so Wardlow is his last match. He wants to be in the WWE by the time The Rock is making appearances around the SuperBowl/XFL relaunch next year. Because he’s not an idiot.

Omega’s free in January too. There’s a good chance we get Cody vs. MJF and AJ vs. Omega at Mania next year.

Would be great if Omega went to WWE just to watch Noid act like it was an amazing, genius acquisition by Vince.

I'm not really sure what implications this could have. I mean we know the show is sold out which is good for them, but what else? Just hope that they are impressed and want to support a new tv deal? Is that basically what's happening?

Pretty much. The execs want to meet with the people running the programming they're taking over, so it's just a chance to schmooze.

It's never a chance to schmooze. It's opportunity to see who gets to stick around and who's getting throw to the curb.
Always. |
