Rate the Game: Week 154
Sweet fancy Moses, it's time for another Rate the Game already? The time just flies by. Anyway, we're ready to go over on this end. Hopefully you're just as ready over on your side of things. We took a gander at another of Capcom's fighting games last week as Street Fighter Alpha was put in the hot seat. How big of a beating did it take under our rigorous scrutiny? We go to the leaderboard for the answer!
Ouch. Spot 139 is now the home of Street Fighter Alpha as it gets awarded a pretty rough score of 2.71 from all of us, making it the lowest-rated Street Fighter game on our list. To be fair, there's only one other Street Fighter game on there, but still, you'd think a follow-up would have enough to it to where it can score higher. This will all change once we get the original Street Fighter and Street Fighter 2010 under the microscope, I'm sure. That being said, is it time for us to put away our Hadoukens and Tiger Uppercuts for now? What's on the agenda for this week? Take it away, bowl! To think I could be using this bowl for trick-or-treaters. Anyways, we've got what we came for from it. This week it's time to go back to 1991, a time when we were trying to shed off the last remnants of the eighties and anthropomorphic animal teams were all the rage. This time around we're looking at Rare's answer to those pizza loving, skateboarding turtles of the ninja variety. It's time for us to rate the original NES Battletoads! A staple of many childhoods, does it have a great legacy over thirty years later in your eyes? Does it have enough going for it to separate itself from so many similar franchises of the time? We've got work to do, ladies and gentlemen. Let's hash it out and see what you think. Until next week! No matter what may happen to me, just remember Lzzy Hale gave me the bedroom eyes... ...again. |

4 for the rad pause beats and fun beat 'em up.
The god damn speederbike level keeps this from being a 5. Sooooooooo many game overs from that level alone. Recall only making it past it a handful of times and finishing the game though. |

3.
If half points were allowed, would give this game more of a 3.5. The game is entertaining to play and the controls are really good but it is also held back by its Nintendo Hard style difficulty with certain levels that make those levels frustrating to play. Don't think I ever got as far as the infamous speed bike level in the NES game but did recently beat the arcade version due to it having unlimited continues and not having the speed bike level. |

3. It can be fun but it has a ton of issues that hold it back, as shown in the AVGN video. And if these had ½ points, this would definitely be a 2½ instead of a 3½ from me. Very average.

This one was always a staple of the rentals we would get every so often, right up there with Rygar, Adventure Island, Golgo 13, those weird Tengen cartridges, etc. Never beat it because of the difficulty combined with not being given a lot of time for games.
Never touched any of the follow-ups either, but the one with Double Dragon seemed interesting at the very least. |

You know this reminds me of playing the Legend of Kage in the arcade. The arcade machine at this one mall was always turned up very loud and i LOVED the music from it.
This, combined with fighting fucking ninjas was EPIC as a kid |
