Looking back at all of them, there were maybe 4 exceptions. 1. Booker T who came in as Champion and checked every single box. 2. DDP got a decent run after being buried throughout the entire Invasion angle, mostly because he was so well liked. 3. Chavo Guerrero because he was a Guerrero and far more entertaining than Eddie before Eddie was rehired by WWE. 4. Shane Helms - Only after he completely changed his entire gimmick and became The Hurricane Nobody else from the initial Invasion was ever given much of a chance. Yeah O'Haire did get paired with Piper and repackaged 2 years later, but that was almost solely to fued Piper and Hogan as Mr America, along with being involved with Vince/Hogan and Vince/Zack Gowen fueds. |

Yeah, Chuck Palumbo got a few shots there.
I’d throw Billy Kidman, Rey Mysterio (although not initially brought in), Fit Finlay and Hugh Morrus into that conversation too. Morrus mainly for that backstage role he was given that they had to take away from him. Finlay and Kidman for their agent roles too, but they both had notable on-screen runs. Kidman several championships and never really “embarrassed” — Finlay was at several WrestleManias and was used as a player/coach. Not to rain on everyone’s parade, but I really do think it was more a talent/attitude thing that kept guys like O’Haire and Jindrak back. Freak athletes (it’s why the got the chance in the first place), but it never came together. Anyone remember “The Reflection of Perfection” Mark Jindrak? Team Angle Mark Jindrak? Yeah… |

Lance Storm wasn’t completely buried coming out of WCW either. An IC Title run, a tag team run or two. Yeah, they did the “boring” stuff with him. But he was never on the outs all the way with the company and they did give him a run as an agent. Pretty sure they “like” him.

I put O’Haire and Jindrak into the Mike Awesome category. They’re guys who can shine in a certain context, but when you really try to get the fully fleshed pro-wrestler out of them, you’re going to end up disappointed.
People really wanted Awesome to be a monster killer in the WWF, but he was about the same size as Billy Gunn. And Billy Gunn looked more jacked. |

I’m pretty sure they put Piper with O’Haire because they were really worried about O’Haire’s live talking.

Lol, I just listened to Cornette’s bit on him again. Says those Devil’s Advocate vignettes were some of the most striking things ever presented on a wrestling program, and they were wrestling’s version of Milli Vanilli. If he had to do them live, people would have been committing harakiri in the stands.
Fucking brutal. |

Sean O'haire was arrested like 5 or 6 times in my area for various assaults. Such a shame.

His Wikipedia makes mention of several of them, some against domestic partners, but I’m fairly certain it does not cover them all.

There was an incident where he claims he was attacked, but witnesses actually stood up for the other guy who beat the shit out of O’Haire apparently.
Also, the guy is kind of notorious for being a piece of shit at public appearances and stuff. Things like autograph signings. Even if the talent was actually there in full, at some point you’re pushing a guy that isn’t good for PR. |

It is sad. That dude almost killed him if I recall. Smashed his face in bad and caused him permanent eye damage.

Man I thought Sean O’Haire was gonna be a big deal. That devils advocate gimmick was perfect. Too bad they shit the bed. I remember watching velocity one night and for whatever reason the crowd behind the hard cam was hot for O’Haire and going nuts for him. I thought that must’ve been a nice moment for him after how his WWE run played out.

If O' Haire had half a brain, he would have stayed outside there. Butterbean had nearly no reach, and unlike Tyson, wasn't good at moving in and STAYING in. If matches went beyond a few swings, Butterbean was trash.
A great spectacle of his time, and I even recall him being in a boxing game on Sega Genesis. Flipped out because after you beat the champ, he walks in from the "crowd" and says "I'M GONNA KICK YOUR ASS!" And little me freaked out of a cuss word in a video game (at the time). |

Just like rasslin, if you don't like the big promotion, the alternatives provide enough content to satisfy! Bellator can be hit or miss but when it hits it's big, PFL is on a similar level to Bellator and now you can watch Khabib's promotion Eagle FC for free and they are running quality shows in Miami.

Honestly at my old age I’m less fond of watching dudes inflicting bodily harm upon one another. Especially all the brain damage.

I'm with Fignuts here. I have the last two UFC games I bought on deep discounts ($10) because its satisfying as fuck to hit people in those games, and I don't have the Fight Night franchise anymore.
UFC is alright, but has become more about the "spectacle and politics". I don't care. MAN BONK OTHER MAN WITH FIST!!! WE CHEER!!!! BONK!!!! |

I dunno, PRIDE was a lot about spectacle and politics. But that’s what made it so great. It embraces the pro wrestling influences of MMA, pretty much making every event must-see... and I was a late adopter—only getting into MMA because of TUF and Griffin v Bonnar.
They understood how to develop mythos and lore for their fighters. I remember seeing Fedor’s ground and pound for the first time and not being able to comprehend how someone could punch so fucking hard. He seemed larger than life and honestly like a titan. Nowadays, the guys are superior in every way, but they don’t feel like it. They seem human and boring and it’s because Dana denigrates his fighters so he doesn’t have to pay them. |

PRIDE was like the wild fucking west and I miss it. Fighting needs more Yakuza-based corruption to make it great again.

We used to have an MMA forum but I guess that was scrapped along with several other forums. Idk why I guess Triple A tried to condense the forums people posted in less to the more popular ones.

I most definitely wasn't aware of it then. I enjoyed their rules a LOT more. That's what did it for me. The first time I saw some dude go down to the ground, and his opponent did a fucking jumping stomp?!!?! More of that. More of being able to still beat the shit outta your opponent regardless of thier position because its THEIR job to protect themselves at all times. |

I much prefer a cage to the ring. The ropes always make things sloppy when clinch work gets to that area. With a cage there is nowhere to go so the action can take a transition to ground game or strikes.

Pride was great for it's time but going back to watch a full show can be a bit of a chore. The level of training is so much higher now so you get to see a lot more technique in fights. When it comes to old MMA I prefer the first 10 or so UFC events. I like to see the legit clash of styles and the total crazy shit show nature of those events.
Also I don't think I really saw Pride events live, at least not until near the very end. So I was always a UFC guy. Even though early UFC had so many duds and fights fall out, champions leave undefended etc... Still loved it. |

Conversely, fighters routinely use the cage for leverage, which is weak.
