Just some weird time-related things:
* Edge is basically as old as John Laurinaitis was at Money in the Bank 2011. * Money in the Bank 2011 is basically right in the middle of WWE post-Austin heel turn and right now. |

1999 is definitely the worst year in the Attitude Era (product wise). I'd say the awfulness runs from Survivor Series 98 to Survivor Series 99 |

It sounds really weird, but I associate 1999 WWF with this different aesthetic to 1998 WWF. I think of 1999 as being more drained of color and I think of lots of guys in white t-shirts hitting each other with trash can lids. It’s a way more “pale” time in my head. 1998 makes me think of deep reds and generally being more saturated with color.
I don’t know, it’s an odd thing, but I’ve felt it since I was a kid. I don’t even know if it’s accurate or it’s just how my brain processed “More Russo.” I think there are strokes of genius in 1999. Well, I’m mainly thinking of Mankind winning the WWF Title. But generally the period does suck. It’s really them cashing in off 1997, 1998 and them having the giant stars they do. I’m fascinated by the reason 2000 managed to be such a financially viable year for them after quite a crappy ‘99. |

2000 had the true elevation of Rock and HHH as the 2 true elite main event guys second only to an absent Austin, the McMahon-Helmsley family drama, a returning "new" Taker, and the intro and upper card "elevation" of Kurt, Jericho, Benoit, and Eddie, plus throw in the Dudleys, Edge and Christian and the Hardys as the elite tag title competitors. That's just a ridiculously stacked roster even without Austin. Probably why 2000 was such a good year.

I watched most of the 1999 WWF pay per views on the network a few years ago and they were messy as fuck

I always wanted O'Haire to feud with Jeff once he started doing the Seanton Bomb. Combine that with Jindrak being more athletic than Matt and you've really got something. |

I liked Palumbo and O'Haire more than Jindrak and O'Haire.

Palumbo is a way better worker than Jindrak, but I felt O'Haire and Jindrak made more sense as two young, over-confident hotshots. Palumbo always looked 50 to me.

That's when it started going downhill but everything post WrestleMania 15 in 1999 was absolutely horrendous imo. At least the first few months were still somewhat watchable but then it got really cringeworthy storyline wise

I think Palumbo and O'Haire had a better look as a team though. They were my two favorite Natural Born Thrillers with Mike Sanders as the mouthpiece of course. I never really cared much for Jindrak and Stasiak was awful lol

Yeah I don't know why he always looked so much older. His face always looked aged by like ten years at least. I'm thinking back on this now that you mentioned it, he even looked like he had wrinkles when he was like 30

I can see what you mean there. Everything got a little “crisper” visually. They had moved away from some grit too. A lot of guys added more color to their gear too. Triple H used gold trimming at Mania. Kurt Angle’s singlets got shinier. Tajiri debuted and had his pants, lol. But yeah, lots of color.

Lol yes Ricky Morton bringing up another ridiculous problem today...crazy amount of no selling especially on "powerful" moves like getting body slammed. It just looks really bad

Somewhere along the line, a bunch of fake bad-asses got the idea that being tough meant you didn’t feel pain. It’s one of the more ridiculous tropes in wrestling that highlights how it’s somehow all become more insecure.
The trading of forearms spot is another one. It’s like “tell me you’re not a bad-ass without actually telling me you’re not a bad-ass.” |

Smarter to do more with less too. But selling requires more talent than a lot of people want to bring to table.

Selling is 50 percent of a wrestling match...if you're not good at selling then you're probably garbage in the ring

I don’t need to believe it’s real, but there has to be some sort of integrity behind the performances. Too many wrestlers these days want to move the meter on where that is and call it “evolution” or “art.”

The more things make sense, the easier it is to get the audience emotionally engaged. Thats true of any story telling medium. In that respect, I think wrestlers have a more difficult task today than they did in the past. Wrestlers in the territory days had to convince the audience what they were seeing is real. Wrestlers of today have to make them forget its not. And the style a lot of these guys practice, really doesn't accomplish that.

I wish more people would try with a prominent platform. I think we’re past the stage where we need to overtly smack people over the head with the idea that we know it’s fake. True ironic post-modern zombie wrestling would be to usher in a new kayfabe with audiences going along with it. |

You know a team who has gotten over organically through in-ring storyteling over the past year?
FTR. Those two dudes are fucking amazing to watch and if there's a match (on anyone's card) that has them, I ensure I don't miss it. They are damn good at mixing a bit of old school "make you believe its real" and new school "make you forget its fake" like Fig said. |

MLW doing their "Battle Riot" show tonight a few mins from my house... should have gone... seems like a fun show. Went to the past couple. Royal Rumble thing... Enzo Amore, "mini" wrestlers, Scarlett Bordeaux, Little Guido, Gangrel

Eh. They have really never put on a great match. I went to many of their shows and they are fun. But they never got to anything close to ROH level match quality.
