The Rock is now referring to himself as the head of the table. And so it begins.

My friend was there for it. Still ranks it as one of his all time favorite matches he saw live.
I was supposed to go too, but my mom found out it wasn't a wwf event like I told her but ecw which she basically forbid me from watching lol |

Gotta appreciate Akeem’s acting depth there. An American playing an African playing a German.
Impressive |

I’ve never been the biggest RVD fan, but those clips make it look amazing.

Van Dam was the most exciting worker on the planet for 3-5 years. WWF didnt get him and they hand cuffed him creatively and athletically. They lost millions on mishandling him.

He seemed like the best guy to try and take them forward in 2001. It was basically there for them to take and they just…didn’t.

I never saw ECW so I never "got" RVD.... just seemed like a guy who was content to just "coast on his rep" for decades and never change/adapt... and his punches were terrible... not Shane McMahon level bad, but terrible....
I do have to admit that it must be some "rep" that he got in ECW because he did make a lengthy career of coasting on it. |

And if he got pushed better, who knows if he would have fallen into his patterns as hard. It’s not like he couldn’t work. Imagine if he got to have a real run up there with Kurt Angle, Austin and Rock while the the chance was there. |

It was like he couldn't work though. You saw one RVD match you saw them all. (In WWE and after... again, can't speak for ECW)

It would be deflating as shit to take bumps and know that you’re never going beyond a certain point no matter what you do.

It was what was best for business.
Yeah, he was over.... but they also realized he wasn't actually that good and it was his "rep" and the "rep of ECW" that people were cheering... and that he could only ever be a B+ player in the big leagues, if that. |

I don’t think that many people saw him in ECW. He had the rep with a certain segment of the audience, but RVD’s cool factor is what really got him, I think (even though he didn’t appeal to me personally).

Now this is where you're re-writing history. He was the most over guy in the company in 01 and had been the hottest act in the business in the eyes of everyone who knew who he was since 97. His 01 wwf run was electric and his matches were creative and exciting. The cut him off by the balls and killed him completely because he was an ecw guy. He stayed over because everyone knew how good he was even if he wasnt good right then.

Instead of being a wrestler he became a caricature. Stoner surfer guy. Had the same match for a decade.

Nah, he sucked. His matches were exciting like the first couple of times I saw him, then if he "gave up" after only a few matches, it says a lot about him and his bad attitude. Why should I push that?

Is there a timeline where RVD got picked up by WCW in 1998 or an unfucked 1999? I want to go there.
