In MMA when a reigning champion suffers an injury that will keep them out under a year (usually that's the time line) the company with make a match between the top contenders an Interim Championship match where the winner will be paid in full as a champion but under the understanding they will fight the reigning (injured) champion when he returns in an Undisputed Championship fight.

Look, while I don’t deride guys for not performing injured, it has to occur to me that this was major “shots fired” and very strategic on the part of Cody to deliver where the ageing, pampered star of AEW would take a dive. It definitely makes one guy seem more “punk” than the other guy.

Concussions can happen anywhere, and it may be unreasonable for me to pin it on the company, and Danielson is making his own choices — but I will be quite cranky if his career ends in the swamp that is AEW.

So if, say, Moxley wins but then loses to Punk, Punk’s reign will be recognized as having never ended and Moxley’s reign never actually happened. But if Moxley beats Pink, Punk’s reign retroactively ends when Moxley became interim champion and Moxley’s reign retroactively begins then.

That's not the way it works in the UFC but I could see AEW doing it that way, but also I don't see Mox getting the Undisputed belt over Punk tbh.

That’s how I thought interim titles worked (in boxing at least). What’s the point of having an interim championship if that’s not the case? Why not just strip the title, crown a new champion and then let the old champion instantly be #1 contender when he returns?

Yes. It was the competition. Even I admit that it's likely that someone from WWE called the higher ups at Dominoes... after the shit storm started. To cover their asses. I mean, I get it. I really do. However, some things don't make sense. Primarily: How the shit does people scream conspiracy when there is a much more logical reason for things going wrong in AEW.

Like, the Executives were right there at the show, invited by Khan himself. They heard MJF say Shit and Fuck. I get being into the entertainment aspect of wrestling, but it's also a business. Said Executives are thinking dollars and cents. And advertisers don't tend to care for edgier content. Especially lately. I am a fucking Unemployed Auto Parts Salesman (as of Today, long story), and somehow I understand how Television works better than the Son of a Billionaire who mismanages 2 sports teams and 2 wrestling promotions (when is the first ROH show, btw?).

Think I’d like to see Eddie Kingston win the interim title. It’s different, he’s one af, and being a gritty underdog champion is something they haven’t had yet. Who knows how serious Punk’s injury is but if it’s 8-12 weeks, a Kingston run with his promo ability wouldn’t be bad, IMO. And I just love Eddie Kingston.

It’ll prob be Moxley though.

I’d love Kingston to get a world title run even if it’s just an interim one but if they do that he’d have to drop it to someone like Jericho before Punk gets back or commit to a Punk heel turn because Punk taking the title from Eddie would make people hate him.
