Ides of March-9/10

Fuck me, do I love Ryan Gosling. Plays a second in command campaign manager under Philip Seymour Hoffman, as George Clooney seeks the democratic nomination.

Paul Giamatti sees Gosling's talent and wants him aboard, telling him his guy's gonna lose so jump from the sinking ship now. All political hell breaks lose, as Gosling is both threatened to be blackmailed, fired, and his career destroyed while also randomly gaining leverage against Clooney that he initially tries to bury until tragedy hits and he's forced to apply his hand.

The whole cast is obviously top notch, and Gosling is so damn magnetic with his silent charisma and presence. It's a pretty fun, interesting and, at the end, sleazy little political movie that shows what I can only imagine is the ugly side of politics the everyday man never sees. Loved it.

I watched The Endless last night. It was excellent, I think Frank Drebin would enjoy it. It's not a film I would dare describe to anyone because it is so enjoyable trying to figure out what exactly is going on.

All I can say is it could be sci fi, horror, a mystery, a thriller or even a sort of buddy-Bildungsroman.

It was as good as anything that has 300x the budget.

I like The Endless as well @ SOB

Have you seen any of the people whose made it other work? Their movie SPRING is one of my favorite horror flicks in recent years. Like The Endless, I won't say anything else about it bc it's not what you're expecting at all.

The second half is good and has lots of surprises. I was a fan of how things ended.

Bale and the rest of the cast are great, but the story and characterization are really scattered and unfocused. There's tons of tonal shifts, from satire to political drama to dark comedy. Was kinda disappointing given the trailer and I didn't learn much more about Cheney.

Holy shit this was bad. No wonder Universal scrapped plans for the shared monster movie universe. Only redeeming quality was that Sofia Boutella was pretty cool as the mummy.

Started watching The Mist and it sucks so far. Like 4 episodes in and no monsters yet. Just a bunch of people with personal problems that aren’t that interesting.

Darabont already made it the best it could've been. It's not one of the better King books and it's one of the best adaptations. I don't see how you get a whole series out of it unless it's a very loose adaptation.

Polar - 3/4

A high concept action film with slow burning interplay, more Wick (the soundtrack and the dog shout-out were very Wick-esque)than Taken yet with some hugely detracting and distracting miscasting and misfiring on the acting front.
Mads Mikkelsen is perfect for a role like this, he's a physical specimen with charisma in abundance and an excellent wry sense of humour. The good bits are as good as Wick, the bad bits look like they belong in another film entirely. There's a gang of assassins that suck all humour from the screen and Matt Lucas cast as the nemesis is questionable in a way that makes me wonder if maybe the director had been watching Tilda Swinton in Snowpiercer a bit too much. Whatever caused it, the boss and the gang were dreadful and took too much screen time. All other aspects were either predictable yet brilliantly realised and styled or completely unpredictable, cool as shit and techno as hell.

There was this one bit with lasers... I won't ruin it for you.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly-6.5/10

Wanted to give it a 7 because the animation during the action, and those sequences were absolutely stellar.

The story and motives behind Broly this time around were also much better.

However, Paragus seemed to have more of a motive than Broly, and he was just kinda there. In the original, Paragus actually had a personal vendetta and plotted his revenge. Whereas in this one, he's just randomly found, and used as a pawn in what seemingly amounted to a sparring match for Frieza to watch. It didn't feel anywhere near as personal this time around even tho it's supposed to be canon.

Also the ending was really anti climactic. And honestly, I found it corny and very unsatisfying. Sure it leaves the door open but it didn't resolve anything.

So yes I liked it, but I didn't like it more than the original. I liked it about the same.

Velvet Buzzsaw... half way through and I'm starting to think that Nightcrawler was great by mistake.
Rene Russo is the wrong choice for this film, Zawe Ashton was exposed as out of her depth in broad British comedies years ago and it is appallingly apparent how little she offers in a big budget Netflix film when you see her acting alongside everyone here. Toni Collette should have been given the Russo role, Rene Russo wasn't cool in the 90's when she actually had a name so this "Rene-sance" being forced down our throats makes no sense commercially nor in terms of drawing an audience.

It's asking a lot of Jake G to pull this movie out of its own arse.

I may well stop watching this. It is very poor.
