All of the South Korean films I have seen are emotionally exhausting, psychologically troubling and/or incredibly stylish and violent in a more unnerving and impressive way than almost any other type of film.
I'll bet despite the basic title, "Mr. Vengeance" is actually way more shocking than "Tokyo Gore Police", "Yakuza Apocalypse" and "Visitor Q" and the last two are by Takashi Mike, the dude responsible for "Ichi The Killer". South Korean films man... You just can't go wrong. Quote:

Other than Oldboy, I think the only other South Korean film I have seen was, R-Point. It was a tad bonkers from what I remember.

I did not have sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.
This was a great story told with some jarring tonal shifts that spread from scene to scene. Always play a film like this dead straight unless the emotional shifts are staged and paced in a way that builds as well as enthrals... in many ways the filming style of this was too accurate a representation of real life behaviour. Every main character seemed atypical of what I expected and the intrusion of inappropriate or undermining behaviours in or around important scenes irritated me more than once. There is a weight of realism to it, the twists and turns are surprising but the performances were slightly too angering to be enjoyable. Aside from that everybody in it is making dreadful decisions with increasing regularity but in a way that deflates rather than fascinates. It's effective, it makes sense and I invest heavily in storylines that homage how (almost)unbelievably screwed up things can become but in the end I think it broke too far from character convention, at least in terms of keeping anybody likeable enough to follow for two hours. In short - Clusterfuck. But a well made one that was obviously intended to be exactly as it is and I can respect that, it just didn't do much for me. Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance - 2.5/4 |

Mr. Vengeance is the weakest of the trilogy in my opinion. Oldboy being the best.
Agreed on South Korean movies as a whole. I always enjoy them. From what I’ve read, John Wick comes from Keanu Reeves’ appreciation of Korean action flicks. |

Aladdin (2019) - 6.5/10
Pretty average, and a lot of the themes/messages/points of the movie seem to "get lost" and "rushed through". The braud who plays Jasmine is smoking hot and looks pretty much exactly like Sarah Michelle Gellar, so that brought the movie up a bit. She was also the only singer who was any good. (They added some female-empowerment song) |

MA - 7/10
MA is fun and crazy (it's crazier than it looks). Octavia Spencer plays a good villain. I don't have any complaints at all, it was a really fun horror movie. |

One Hour Photo 6.5/10
Besides a pretty good straight performance from Robin Williams, it felt more like a glorified tv movie than anything else. |

Godzilla: King of the Monsters-6/10
This'll be lengthy so fair warning. My initial feeling leaving the theatre was disappointment. It is not a bad movie, but it's certainly not a good one. It does feel like a step back from the previous installment. Where the last one was a self contained story that followed a less is more approach, built to its climax and gave a definitive ending that could be built off of, this movie is the contrary, feeling very much like it's trying to set up a universe and rushing thru things because it's sequel is coming out soon. The criticism that the story itself is dumb and the human characters are bland is valid. The cast tries their damndest, but the material is so clunky and, at times, illogical, that it makes what they're doing insufferable and boring. The motives for releasing the Titans is absurd. While you don't need Oscar worthy material here, it has to at least make sense. That's not present here. It felt like the film needed to find a reason to have all these monsters running around, so it came up with the easiest, ham fisted way it could to get it outta the way. There's multiple scenes throughout that are strictly exposition, and it gets pretty old fairly quickly. You're getting what feels like power points during a lot of the movie. In contrast to the first one, which gave you some hints of Godzilla's origin and why he exists, this one hammers home everything it can to make sure you know there's a lot of monsters and that they used to rule the world and Godzilla used to fight some of them and etc etc. The kaiju fights are fun. But they go a little overboard. There's no build up to anything. They just give you the main event right to start, as opposed to building and teasing. And without giving away spoilers, they blew their fucking load on Godzilla. I'm not talking about using him in action sequences, because he's really only in 3 and the final one is rightfully the longest. I'm talking about what they have him capable of doing. It's ridiculous, and after seeing it, my thought was "no way the Kong from Skull Island has any shot". The other issue I had is there are just too many damn monsters. Most of them being useless in the context of the movie. Godzilla and co aren't as special when you know there's another 20 or so out there. And when they're not adding anything to the movie, it begs the question why they are there in the first place. There are some cool moments. Godzilla gets most of them. Mothra has her own as well. And the sound design is spectacular. One thing they continued from the first one that I really liked was the angles they shot the monsters from. You did get some standard shots and there's a scene during the Godzilla/Ghidora main event that is throwback to original. But a lot of the time you see the monsters fighting from the humans pov and I thought that really helps sell just how massive these animals are. They also kept the pace at which the monsters move similar to the first. These things aren't flying around at breakneck speeds. I mean, they are in the context of the movie, but they look big, slow and lumbering. Which is something I liked from the first one and was happy to see they kept that approach. All in all, it was just ok. I like the previous one better, and I feel like this was just too much packed into one movie. I hope the next one is better. |

Really bad story and really bad dialogue. Monster fights at the end are fun but that can't save the movie. |

John Wick 3 - 4.5/5. Really enjoyed it, loses 0.5 I guess for being a bit over the top, but it's also why I love them. Straight up action movie, not much more I could ask for really.

This was bad. Should have retained the original production crew from the first movie and just keep churning out good stuff. Worked wonders for the new Planet of the Apes franchise. |

Secret life of pets 2-8/10
Takes the frenetic, wacky, slapstick and quick pace of the first one and applies it to 3 ongoing subplots that merge into one by the 3rd act. Voice cast excellent. Animation is gorgeous and highly detailed and a lot of gags land. It's a funny movie that just wants to be funny and nothing more, and greatly succeeds. Had a good time watching it with the little one, who also loved it. |

Rocketman - 4/5 - Thought it was pretty good. Pretty campy, as you would expect a movie about Elton to be. It was a bit more musical-ly than I would've liked, but not too bad.

Dark Phoenix - 2/10
I usually like the X-films but this one was a huge mess. Outside of maybe two fight scenes it's really bad and the worst X-film ever. |

Sad this is the note they're going out on. Should've ended the central X-Men movies after Days of future past, and called it a day for the whole thing after Logan.

Amazing they made those 2 stellar films and followed up with Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix. Sad way to go. Now it's Disney's turn.

No one has a character in Dark Phoenix, everyone is just angry or depressed the whole movie. Storm is ANGRY, Cyclops is ANGRY, Jean is DEPRESSED. Beast is DEPRESSED. Mystique is ANGRY.

Even the dialogue, and sometimes I think X-Men films have brilliant, touching dialogue, but this time, woah boy.
The dialogue is like a parody of a superhero film. The scenes are so...weird too. Half of Professor X's scenes involve him rolling into a room and pouring a glass of whiskey for no reason. |

The worst part of all is somehow they took what could/should be a great story and made it incredibly boring. Half the movie feels like nothing is happening. The aliens who are the villains are so boring. Every single time they came on screen I kept thinking "can we please focus on the Dark Phoenix instead...is this movie ever going to focus on the Dark Phoenix".

The X-Men are basically the equivalent of a hot new band in this movie and Professor X is given the role of 'shifty, immoral manager of the band' and it's all so out of place with every other film in the X-series.
And then aliens show up bc why not. |

What's sad is X-Men are always going to be relevant. And Fox neverreally dove into what makes them special. They alsonever built up to the Phoenix saga. Both times it was hinted at end of movie then the next one jumps into it and it's shit.
Shame really. I hope Disney does them justice. I think they will. But the X-Men should go away for a good long while. |

I am Mother
3 out of 4 stars. It's what would happen if you combined Moon with Horizon: Zero Dawn and added a dash of the Matrix along with the animatronics of Chappie. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I feel like if you sympathized to any degree with Thanos, you will probably sympathize with the villain here as well. It's not going to make any top ten sci-fi lists but it is a solid entry in the genre even if it breaks no barriers and won't be terribly profound for anyone who enjoys sci-fi. SPOILER: show |
