Jonah Hill? Dawg, you clearly had no idea about how personal this project was. Get your ass outta here fool.

I understand that but it manifests in a way that is essentially just him making a porno of sorts... it relies heavily on imagery and comes across as very shallow, there are a million conflicts that have potential but they're half assed and don't get resolved in any meaningful way, the only character who changes at all is the main kid but he hardly even does anything, he just has things happen to him. Jonah Hill misses the 90's and wanted everyone to know

I couldn't agree more...it's very self indulgent. I had my expectations from the project but I was also aware of what I was getting into. His relationship with his older brother, his identity crisis and his desire to fit in, also that crash scene...how can you not get anything out of this movie?

Annihilation - 8/10

very imaginative. Film excels at creating tension. One of the more creative scifi IPs in the last 15 years

I never understood why there was a storyline of her having an affair with a black man. It seemed so random and didnt have anything to do with the movie. I think they just wanted Natalie Portman to get get dicked by a black guy.

It fleshes out her motivations. She is trying to overcome her guilt. As her husband risked his life she was getting dicked by a black guy. In many ways he journey is an arc of redemption evem if the person that needs to forgive her is herself.

But admittedly you'd have the same movie with out that. Her motivation being "curious scientist" was plenty.

Us- 6/10

I didnt understand Us. I get the end. I get that the kid puts the mask completely on when he's scared, so obviously at the end, he knew.

What I didnt get was the whole double's of people thing. Why, how ect. No idea what was going on with that. I couldnt stand the husband. The guy seemed like a giant pussy bitch. Lupita chick was really good. I really like her as an actress, but I found myself more interested in the white family with Elizabeth Moss. Her double and her two girls freaked me out. I would have loved to see there family as the main family in the roll. But without Tim Heidecker. He's great in this movie roll, but If that white family was the focus of the movie, I think they would have to get a more serious husband.

Come to think about it, both husbands were made to be giant pussies in this movie and that really bugs me. I think it might have been a better movie if the male role was actually taken more seriously.

Also, unless I missed something, there was a serious plot hole that kind of annoyed me. Towards the end, the two black kids, I guess think the same or something? So the good black kid starts walking backwards and the bad black kid start doing the same exact thing. And the good black kid walks the bad black kid into a fire. If all of them are so linked together, then why cant they all manipulate eachother like that?

There were some cool scenes. I loved Elizabeth Moss, especially her evil self. I feel like she was terribly under used. The use of music was good. I personally loved the NWA song more than I did 5 On It.

Overall, it's a 6/10 for me. I thought it would be a lot better. Maybe if there's some really cool explanation of some things that I may have missed, I might raise my score a bit, but there were still some things that really bugged me.

Mother! (2017) - 5/5

I watched on Prime. Holy shit. I'm sure if I go back that I could find a lot of posts where you guys are polarized over this movie, that seems to be the case. So let me set my stage for you. I was searching "best horror on prime" and came across Mother! and started reading. The review made me think this was gonna be fucked up but not your typical horror film, if it is even that. And it's not.

Wow what an experience a true mind fuck. The story you should know is simple, an author with writers block and his wife are living in an old house they bought, it's fucking huge. While he is trying to put a word on paper she is fixing the whole house and seems content with it. There are some weird things going on in the house, feels like it could be ghosts, and then Ed Harris knocks on the door, ut oh you know this ain't good he's smoking a cigarette. He say's he's a doctor and "they told him that this was a bed and breakfast" ... everything goes well so they end up having him stay the night. Things are a bit weird. Why would you want a stranger in your house at all much less over night. Especially when you told him not to smoke in your house and he still does. Well it was the author who invited and he can't just tell him to hit the road cause his wife feels uncomfortable can he? No of course not. So the woman goes to bed and wakes up to the sound of someone getting sick and walks out to see her husband helping this man who seems to be naked vomit into the toilet. And then the next day his wife shows up (Michelle fucking Pfeifer) and starts making out with Ed Harris like they are teenagers....

Okay i'll stop there. Just know that the invasion of your personal space is HIGHLY at risk in this movie. The way it is shot, you are the mother, Jennifer Lawrence, so hot, and you feel all of this anxiety that she feels. So in a way it was a horror film like I've NEVER seen before. I've never felt SO ANXIOUS during a movie, holy shit. I wanted it to end after about an hour but I couldn't turn it off because it keeps topping itself and topping itself until of course a big fucking mind fuck climax.

The best thing about it is when you are done watching and you go online to find out what the fuck you just watched and the director is quoted as saying
Quote:
"How if you walk out of this movie are you not going to give it an 'F'? ... We wanted to make a punk movie and come at you. And the reason I wanted to come is because I was very sad and I had a lot of anguish and I wanted to express it."
Seriously, that's a relief. Because when I saw this it reminded me of Schenectady New York and that movie was a total mind fuck but I think that everything in it actually makes sense and fits into a puzzle somewhere. Where as this movie is a total mind bash and the director lets you off the hook by saying "don't try to figure it out, ain't happening, just feel the feels". This movie feels like a social experiment. Movies often make us laugh, cry, but to truly feel so anxious you put a pillow over your head because you can't take seeing someone have to deal with this shit... man that's an achievement of the moving picture if you ask me so 5/5 for Mother!

I give some plot for my review because I hope that it may make you want to watch the movie. I'm not that interested in somebody's simple rating of a movie, I want to know why.

I'm not one of focus on themes. For instance, I didn't think about The Bible when I was watching Mother! I went online afterwards and saw Javier's clues about the movie in an interview and now I do see that is and easy way to understand the film. But it's not what is directly presented, it's a subliminal message. It doesn't affect my experience. I'm not saying its wrong to watch movies in whatever way they hit you, or to talk about it. Why critique my critique? That's kind of like saying "the circumstances in which you watched and perceive the film are wrong", which is bullshit and probably not something that you (sean) or anyone on here actually stands for. But the one behind the keyboard is always the right one huh?

"IT COMES AT NIGHT" does certainly create a feeling, and at times very well. But I didn't enjoy the feeling because the payoff has no catharsis. It drags you through the mud until you drown in the river. On top of my issue with the ending, I don't remember any explanation what so ever for the paranormal aspect of the movie. What is infecting them and is it a biological plague or supernatural... I guess my issue was the ending was simply most of the cast dying and no mention about the issue of the movie which is IT COMES AT NIGHT.

The Farewell (2019) - 5/5

This is a funny but moving true story about the grandmother of a Chinese family where the majority of the family has moved to Japan or The US and the Matriarch has stayed home with few relatives. When the grandmother is discovered to be sick, the family meets in China for a wedding disguised as a goodbye.

This was such a sweet movie and very educational or me, and even my Chinese girlfriend. To see how family operates as the primary factor in the east where as in the west it is ones self that is the priority, was really eye opening. Beautiful acting from the Grandmother, a Chinese actress who I think will get an Oscar nod for Supporting Actress here, and Awkwafina, a really fine performance from her. I'd go see it with your girlfriend or if you are interesting in Chinese culture and the way it differs from ours.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - 4/5

Another great entry from Tarantino. A little on the long side and probably could have been chopped here and there.

SPOILER: show
The end with Brad, Leo, and the Dog destroying the Manson family was great stuff.

Dragged Across Concrete - 3.5/4

From the creator, writer and director of "Bone Tomahawk" and "Brawl In Cell Block 99" comes a third big budget exploitation film that does exactly what it says on the tin. After a horror styled western and a deathmatch themed prison revenge film S Craig Zahler treats his audience to a dirty cop heist thriller. Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn are two violent cops on the road towards becoming dirty with a one off heist they need to recoup cash from an unpaid suspension after they are caught abusing a suspect in public. Tory Kittles and Michael Jai White play two for-hire wheel men for a bank robbery and getaway by some shady looking dudes in night vision and assault gear, Tory Kittles motivations for the robbery are also laid out in a side plot.
There are side plots down every possible route it seems(one of which involves a bank employee's day before the heist, another which involves Mel Gibson's daughter, another for Vince Vaughn's girlfriend) and it is a long, slow film that culminates in brief bursts of spectacular violence, something which is becoming one of his trademarks.
This film is just as thoughtful and funny as his others using the same extreme bloodshed and gore to bring you back to the reality of what's actually happening. Though the placement of the violence in this film is more effective arguably than the gore filled previous two, Cell Block 99 in particular.
I enjoyed everything about this besides the pacing and I know it's a whole part of the process with these films he's creating, the theme and the atmosphere are completely intertwined and after a long haul you get a sizeable reward.
I just think there are noticeably more moments in this film where almost nothing is actually happening that perhaps weren't entirely necessary for a movie made in a post drive-thu era. I need a little more movement in a film with a 150+ minute runtime.
There are a fair few scenes of Mel and Vince just in the car together though the dialogue in this film is on par with Bone Tomahawk, as is the body count.

This is a third exceptionally exntertaining film by the man Zahler. Each time he convinces yet another superstar to come aboard.
I hope he carries on with these self written projects though, you don't want to fuck around with a style that specific because he obviously has near total control over the films he is making right now. You can see that from his use of at-times ludicrously cheap looking special effects. This film is lacking in that as far as I noticed, I think there was one moment with a hand but I can't say for sure. I thought everything looked pretty damned realistic to be honest. I was encouraged by how well played the ending was and it's absolutely a worthwhile film, especially if you like Tarantino, Carpenter and Cronenberg. I think he's a lot like those particular film makers in terms of style. His stories are typically more authentic exploitation though, He's not just paying homage. he actually is an exploitation film maker.

I wonder what he's making next.

Ready Or Not - 8/10

This is a very fun horror movie. Loaded with dark humor and good scenes, a strong performance from the lead actress too.

Ok, this is some weird shit. I just finished watching "Dragged Across Concrete" (minus Sounds Up My Alley in the title). - That's a solid 8,5.

They found the one guy with Downs Syndrome that doesn't look like all of the others to lead the film.
I bet it's dreadful.

First time i saw jackie brown i prob would have given it a 7/10 but with each viewing ive liked it more than the last. Film really grew on me.

Might be Robert Forresters best work. Max Cherry is so richly played. The performance gives so much while doing very little.

Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders
Batman v Two Face

10/10 each

Harmless, campy, ridiculous and funny ode that captures the tone of the original 60s series perfectly. Adam West of course was in top form. William Shatner plays Two Face, and he's awesome. Brought back a lot of memories as a kid.

The first one has a couple of funny reference gags to darker versions of Batman.

Second one has a creative re imagining of Two Face that I liked and fit the style of the original show. It was great. All of it. I'm glad they made these, and that Adam West got a chance to come back to role one more time.

IMO Jackie Brown is Tarantino's best film as a director. It's a film with an especially high replay value, every performance is given significance. I remember really loving Bridget Fonda, Pam Grier, Sam L and Robert Forster initially, but Michael Keaton has a classic cameo too.

It's a superior film.
