The War of the Roses 7/10
Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito team-up again (after Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile) for a black comedy about a couple whose marriage falls apart and descends into a bitter divorce, centring around the possession of their house. It doesn't really come into its own until the final 50-60 mins, but they are worth it. Also, at the beginning, the camera work seems off and its not until those last 50 mins, once things start to go bonkers, that it clicks. |

I figured all the positive rep I've given you over the years at least buys me a movie review.

The loyalty those reps bought you is actually to be contested as an asset in your divorce.

I don't know how divorce works in your village but reputation here is considered a pre-marial asset and cannot be touched by the courts.

I really don't think I'm going to make it through Barb and Star and if I do there's no way I'm giving it a proper review treatment.
This is my second attempt at it and it's hard going. I am 28 minutes in and I have smirked once. Their boss was mildly amusing for a second and it caught me off guard. I started to think it might be half way decent. I don't know what is going on with Frank Drebin but he's obviously in a bit of emotional turmoil if he's seeking solace in this. Oh look now there's a pianist called Richard Cheese singing "I love boobies". That's an actual moment in this film about two Nebraskan spinsters with Minnesotan accents that go on holiday. It's rubbish. |

Smiled again at a joke there.
I might keep at it and see if this thing can actually get a laugh out of me. I laughed at The Hottie And The Nottie once. That toenail scene is better than the film it was placed in. Last edited by Seanny One Ball; 05-14-2023 at 12:41 AM. |

The beginning was a bit rough, I agree... was thinking "what was Drebin on about?"... but eventually "got into it"... I probably did end up giving it a higher rating then I should have....

There is very little originality in this film.
The jokes are all obvious or overused, I think it's relying on performance but theres nothing spectacular there to grab you either... It actually feels like an Adam Sandler film and while I like Sandler and let him off the hook for his appalling laziness... Kristen Wiig isn't a bold or brash enough performer for this script. Sandler should have done this with David Spade in drag. Last edited by Seanny One Ball; 05-30-2021 at 08:44 PM. |

This is so mediocre that it has reached a state of offensive blandness.
Kristen Wiig is in danger of Ferrelling. |

There's just no material here. Nothing at all.
This is about as far from Airplane! as a comedy can go. One actual joke every half hour and a bunch of incongruous, nonsensical events that you've seen 100 times before in better but still not great comedies. It's just lazy and bad all around. I'm fucking pissed off I bothered to watch it. |

Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar - 0.5/4
This is far and away the worst attempt at a comedy film I have seen in years. I'm actually mad about it for a variety of reasons and all of them are things Adam Sandler is regularly accused of. The difference is that Sandler isn't a material comic, he's a performance comic so he can be a lazy bastard and get away with a low laugh count on paper provided he pulls enough funny faces and silly accents. This film here though is an inexcusable waste of talent and time. Kristen Wiig is a writer and a great material comic, she is not a brilliant performer. I actually find her physical comedy to be quite awkward and embarassing for her. She's not good at it. Her strength is in spoken comedy and here she's given herself nothing to work with but crappy dialogue, a shitty accent and a dumb haircut. Maddening. |

Yeah, miles away from an Airplane! or Naked Gun..... which I think made me enjoy it less off the start because I was like "WTF is Drebin smoking?"..... once I "accepted" that it was nothing close to those actually I managed to get into it for what it was....

If you’re thinking “Mandy wasnt so long ago” then you need to know he has made 16 films between then and Willy’s Wonderland.

My last 3 were Mandy, Color out of Space and Willy's Wonderland and as far as i am concerned, any of those 3 beat anything Willis has pissed out in the same amount of time.

"The Square" swedish film was really good... kinda "shot" like that movie Force Majeure... log of scenes where i started laughing like 5 seconds after they ended. its about a museum curator who makes a couple of fuckups where he uses like semi bad judgment but it ends up ruining his life

The Conjuring: The Devil Made me do it - 7/10
Series has gotten "a bit naff". Introducing fucking wizards into the mix now. Still I enjoyed it, and thought overall it had more memorable scares than the second one. First is still the best though. |

Let's not bother with the "true story" nonsense. If you're going to take it that far off the rails, then let's go full on ridiculous. Give me a post apocalyptic hellscape dominated by evil spirits, demons, and satanic wizards. And the Warren's have to save a group of survivors while staying alive themselves. Fuckin ed Warren mowing down demons with a mini gun instead of needing to be saved by his wife again.

In the Heights - 9/10
jumbled thoughts incoming The opening 20 min didnt hook me which for a musical is typically a red flag. the "i want song" however did. bottom of the 2nd act contains a number that can stand itself up against the greatest numbers ever sang. cinematography is outstanding. the choreography is as good as it gets. theres somr conflict and the bottom of the 2nd act thats very forced but the resolution is so completely worth it that it doesnt matter. laugh. smile. cry. this musical hits on all cylinders. as far as the music it steps on Hamilton's toes often and perhaps deliberately or perhaps LMM only has so many songs in him before he hit repeat but it doesnt matter because it all does a wonderful job guiding the audience along so that we arrive at a wonderful climax. also being back in a theater was wonderful. |
