just got
XENOBLADE CHRONICLES the first one for wii, it's catchy, 8 hours in and they're still tossing fuckin tutorials at me though, that's a shit it's a bit of learning, battle system is cool but kind of confusing, seems to be pretty fast paced, you're always switching through different skills and "arts" and shit. they do that annoying shit that new JRPGs do though where they give you three party members and only let you control one and you just have to hope the AI does what you want, and if your main person dies then you get game over. just give me back my menu based combat, dammit. also got Star Fox Zero - Yeah giving my Wii U some use and the games are cheapish now, this is cool I guess, again though just fucking let me play Star Fox, I know how it works, you don't have to tutorial me through the first level of fucking Star Fox, they never did on SNES or N64. No patience for tutorials, god damn, just wish games were simple enough that you didn't even need fuckin tutorials. but uh, it's okay, kinda annoying with the motion controls. only played one level. it came with Star Fox Guard which is this tower defense game but you play from the POV of the towers and... eh. i love tower defense, but it's a little different from what i like. so we'll see. |

Are there any tower defense games akin to Warcraft 3/Frozen Throne online tower defense/maul, that was the peak of tower defense games IMO.

I was on board with the idea when I first heard about it for a multitude of reasons. Chief among them was the whole 30's cartoon vibe that this game fully commits to short of licencing Bimbo, Bosko, Betty Boop, and any other possible early toons whose names start with "B". But OTHER reasons, like the underwhelming Mighty No. 9 and Yooka-Laylee and other underwhelming kickstarted titles helping derail the hype train. Still took a chance on this (and Ghost of a Tale), and super glad I did. Something something Steamboat Willie fan on prom night. I remember a Penny Arcade comic called "The Megaman 9 Effect", and felt the same way whilst playing this. Especially if you're lucky enough to share a couch with someone (which I was, much like like with Scott Pilgrim before the DLC). There are some nitpicky issues, like the fact that: a) parrys, supers, specials, and knockouts don't offer frames of invincibility directly after use. Knockouts in particular... man, you don't know how many times I've killed a boss just to have one of those parting shots nail me and all that work just evaporated. b) time only stops on activation of a superspecials, not use... which I don't know if was intentional or not, but on spots where you have to pay attenton to not only the target but the environment (like Grim Matchstick), you can screw yourself. c) Lack of preview for powerups. Considering you are committed to a purchase, it would be nice to see what you're getting yourself into when your coins are at a premium. While nothing is really "unneccessary", some weapons/items are situationally better, and if you don't know that beforehand, tough shit, because you already bought something else and you're stuck with it as it basically saves what you've done. d) Super specials must be used if gained. There are times where your meter gets 100% full, but I just wanted to use the regular special because of shot timing. It would be nice to toggle each independently instead of adding meter monitoring to the layered patterns and bullet hell. e) Kinda goes back to a with the parry, but for the second player revive: if you die while reviving your partner at the apex of your jump, fuck you, because they can't reach. Don't know if any of that is intentional for the "Nintendo hard" difficulty or an oversight. What I do know is that all of that together seems to make things more frustrating that it seems like it should be. However... Nothing I said is actually anywhere close to being a deal breaker. Cue up all the "GIT GUD" you can muster, because it is pretty much like trying to plow through Contra without "the code" the first time you ever played it. The art and music direction is obviously astounding, but it actually has an added effect of making you less likely to smash your controller against the wall because you just can't stay mad at it no mater how many "this isn't even my final form" baddies cut you down. Repeatedly. Without mercy. Because of the bossrush-y nature of the thing, it's fairly easy to take on as much at a time as you want. Spend some hours or kill a few spare minutes on a couple of tries. Fun either way. As much as a lot of big budget titles are going into the loot box sausage factory and going all in with microtransactions, this is a refreshing change in every way, and it feels almost shameful that I'm getting more enjoyment from a $20 download than a $60+ juggernaut looking to bleed people dry. I can only hope whenever Bloodstained shows up, it will also steer clear of being a disappointing shitshow, and even more hope that there is more of this on the way in the future. TL;DR - Buy it if you can, survive if it lets you! *future proofing: my current avatar is from said game. It will undoubtedly change at some point and have impact on my comment, if anyone gives a shit by then. |

Although this is more gushing about Cuphead, it's also something there needs to be more of in general: custom button mapping.
I've never quite understood how, as systems have gotten more and more complex over the years and "more like PC", this is one thing that has gotten more scarce than it already is in the console side of things. Fighting games have mostly maintained it, and maybe some shooters. Sort-of (changing entire control schemes), but sometimes I might just want to swap "jump" and "fire" because it makes more sense to me. I like it when games allow free reign of function assignment. |

FFXII update: Beat Yiazmat in like 45 minutes at level 70, pretty much doing other stuff and just reselecting a party leader when I got KO'd. Absolute auto-pilot of a superboss. Omega Mk XII on the other hand wrecked me and nearly gave me a rare game over, plus there's a boss rush mode where he's even worse then you immediately have to fight all five judges at once and they all use elixirs and one of them has status nukes. Absolute nightmare. Those three fights have been the only real challenge I've found with it though, a couple of the Espers were solid battles, Zodiark, Ultima and Cuchulainn probably. Just have to wrap up the "story" then there was some other game I think I wanted to play...

So i'm playing Silpheed: Lost Planet on ps2. I love shmups. The game is cool. Decent. But there is one major issue. There is no way to save progress at all. I learned the hardway.

Vayne is such a weak villain I guess it's fitting that he would go down in less than a minute to my OP gang of tagalongs.
SPOILER: show As FF games go, it's still my least favourite of the PS1-PS2 era. I'd put it over most(?) of the NES/SNES games and the XIII trilogy. Hard to say in comparison to XV since I feel like they more or less share the same strengths and weaknesses. Decent. |

Shadow of War is soooooooo fucking fun. Just got to the second act and gained the ability to start building an army, and I can already tell I'm going to have a lot of fun with this.
If you like killing shit and feeling like a badass, this is the fucking game. |

How does it rank vs the origional? Like an add on or a true sequel?

They didn't mess with the formula, but there is way more than just an add on. Combat and stealth have a lot of new abilities to unlock. Orcs have additional strength and weakness possibilities. The regions are more diverse in appearance. Big thing is the army building though. That adds a whole new aspect to the game.

Not a fan of the tank bot in Recore. The new storyline is interesting enough though. Hopefully the entire expac does not revolve around the new corebot.

Built up a good selection of captains in shadow of war, and took on my first fortress. Was a lot of fun and HOLY SHIT can this game fill the screen with a lot of dudes. Didn't get to face the overlord for story reasons, so that was gay. Next one though.
The army building stuff has a lot of neat features. You can assign certain captains for the assault on the fortress, and upgrade them so they go into battle with a battalion of trolls, suicide bombers, a big siege beast, etc. Theres a bunch of stuff. Before the fortress assault, you can do cool stuff with them. You can assign them to go kill another captain. Then you can participate in the fight and help him win. You can assign one of them as your bodyguard. Then you can summon him whenever you want to help in battle and even give him commands to stealthily kill other orcs. The other command I unlocked is infiltration, which gets the captain close to one of the war chiefs, who are the overlords second in command. then they'll get him alone and you both can take him out. I had two captains infiltrate so it was 3v1. Killing war chiefs reduces the fortresses defenses. Might be more commands that I haven't got to yet. Even without all the new army building stuff, there were a ton of cool mechanics in this game, but this just sends it into the stratosphere. Might end up replacing something on my top 5 of this generation list. |

Whow. Recores new expansion thing was super short. Wish the game was more popular to get a sequel. It has so much upside and it a wonderful concept.

Heck. Even the last dungeon was literally just the king of the new cult which was basically a mini boss.

Finished Persona 5 recently. GREAT game. Just blazed through The Fractured But Whole which was also a good time.
Now I'm playing Horzion Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds. More of the great gameplay but with better story telling. Already can tell that I want more after this. |

Also, by the 1-year anniversary of the Switch release, it's already expected to have outsold the Wii U. Naturally with the huge sales success, a lot of third-party developers are jumping on board the Switch train. Additionally, it's kind of a test to see if the game sells well. If so, Rockstar will likely develop new Switch-exclusive IPs. Same with Bethesda porting Skyrim to Switch. It's a testing of the waters, so to speak. |
